Siemens Gamesa has signed a record order for its leading wind energy platform called the Siemens Gamesa 5.x turbine, to power the São Vitor wind farm in the northeast.

The wind farm will be equipped with 75 Siemens Gamesa 5.8-170 turbines with OptimaFlex technology, operating at 6,2 MW. The forecast is that the wind farm, in the state of Bahia, will start operating at the end of 2022. Essentia Energia will supply the energy produced at the site to a major electricity supplier in the country through a Energy Purchase and Sale Agreement (PPA).

Combined with a contract for the 312 MW Tucano wind farm in the state of Bahia, Siemens Gamesa has already booked 777 MW of orders for its 5.X platform in Brazil. Globally, the company has already booked more than 1,5 GW of orders for this industry-changing turbine, which offers one of the most competitive levelized energy costs (LCoE) on the market through its power rating and rotor size.

“This is a big step forward for Brazilian renewable energy that will help bring clean energy to many thousands more. The project will also employ market-leading technology, which means we can install fewer turbines while producing more power capacity. We are happy to do this alongside such a strong financial partner, Patria Investments, an alliance that we look forward to building over the coming years,” said Lars Bondo Krogsgaard, CEO of Siemens Gamesa's Onshore business.

In 2019, 19,5 GW of wind power was purchased through PPAs from more than 100 companies in 23 countries, according to data from Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF).

“Renewable energy has been a key sector for Patria Investments within our infrastructure practice. We live in a time when sustainability and the environment are a growing concern of society. In this context, renewable energies become even more relevant. This partnership reinforces our commitment to the sector and our active participation in the development of a critical area for the region. Essentia Energia is a portfolio company of Patria Infrastructure IV, the largest fund ever raised for the infrastructure segment for Latin America ”, says Marcelo Souza, president of Essentia Energia, partner of Patria and responsible for Vertical Energy.

Siemens Gamesa will locally produce this new turbine at its plant in Camaçari, in the state of Bahia, in turn boosting the local economy and increasing the competitiveness of the Siemens Gamesa 5.X platform. The order also includes a service and maintenance contract.

Brazil is the seventh largest wind energy market in the world, according to the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC), with more than 17 GW of installed capacity.
