Elizabeth Bagley, U.S. Ambassador to Brazil, Warned About the Country’s Concern Over the Arrival of Iranian Warships. The Brazilian Navy Granted Authorization to the Iranian Navy After a Green Light from the Lula Government.
The relationship between the Lula Government and the United States is in a real bind this Monday (02/27). The main reason is the arrival of Iranian warships on the Brazilian coast, after the granting of authorization for berthing by the Brazilian Navy. The presence of the Iranian Navy in national territory worries U.S. authorities regarding the type of cargo they are carrying, as well as the country’s growing presence in Latin America.
Arrival of Warships in Brazil Raises Alarm in the United States About the Country’s Presence in Latin America
The authorization from the Lula Government, through the Brazilian Navy, for the arrival of Iranian warships in Brazil, caused a real bind between the Brazilian government and the United States.
The Navy is responsible for handling requests for the berthing of foreign ships in Brazilian territory. Thus, after inspections and a green light from the current leader of the country, it granted the necessary authorization for the vessels of the Iranian Navy to dock on the national coast.

However, the decision created an imminent concern among U.S. authorities present on national soil, such as Elizabeth Bagley, the U.S. ambassador.
She cited terrorism and illicit trade as the main points of concern for the country regarding the arrival of the warships in Brazil.
According to her, these ships have already faced sanctions from the United Nations after facilitating illegal trade in the past. Bagley emphasized that the United States understands Brazil’s significance and does not believe the Iranian Navy should be in the country.
Even With Recommendations from U.S. Representatives, the Brazilian Navy Approved the Arrival of Iranian Warships in Brazil
U.S. Congresswoman Maia Salazar also commented on the situation and warned about the dangers of Iran’s tightening ties in Latin America with the Lula Government’s authorization, through the Brazilian Navy.
“Iran has aggressively strengthened its ties with the Western Hemisphere through similarly minded socialist regimes in Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Cuba. They are also seeking opportunities elsewhere, and it is no coincidence that Iranian ships are docking in Brazil just a month after a socialist regained power in the country,” the Congresswoman commented.
Although these recommendations and alerts from U.S. representatives in Brazil were made, the Lula Government still gave the green light for the arrival of the warships in the country.
The Brazilian Navy conducted the operation as usual, requesting adherence to current sanitary and epidemiological regulations.
Thus, the representatives of the Iranian Navy present in Brazil will spend the next week in Rio de Janeiro.
In recent weeks, the warships from the country were also in national territory, while a U.S. aircraft flew over the country.
The movements generated rumors about the U.S. desire to verify possible armaments and nuclear items carried by the Iranian vessels.
With or without a bind with the United States, the Iranian Navy warships remain in the country after authorization from the Lula Government and the Brazilian Navy.
