Doctor Sergio Minervini, famous among classic enthusiasts, reveals the quirky story of the 1975 Maverick he bought from a former Vasp pilot, preserving its original badges to this day
Doctor Sergio Minervini, known among vintage car lovers as Doctor Corcel, owns one of the largest collections of Ford Corcel in Brazil. In addition to these classics, he also keeps models from other brands in his garage, including a very special example: a 1975 turquoise blue Ford Maverick Super Luxo, with only 30,000 kilometers on the odometer.
The car, which belonged to a former pilot of the Vasp airline, holds more than just elegance and power. It carries a curious narrative full of negotiations.
Minervini recalls that the acquisition was almost a stroke of luck, as the final price turned out to be a true bargain.

The Rare Blue Maverick: The Car That Generated Family Discord
The doctor shares that the story began back in the 1980s. The Maverick was the pilot’s pride and joy, but there was a domestic issue.
His wife could not stand the car because her husband always used it to visit his mother in the countryside of São Paulo. This routine created friction at home, and the vehicle came to symbolize the conflict.
“This Maverick was the pilot’s pride, but his wife didn’t like the car because her husband always used the coupe to visit his mother in the countryside of São Paulo“, he stated.
In an attempt to please his wife, the pilot bought a brand new Ford Escort XR3. Still, the complaints continued. Tired of the arguments, the owner decided to sell the Maverick.
Long Negotiations and a Promise
Minervini remembers that the car was offered for around 18,000 cruzados, an amount he could not afford. Nonetheless, he kept his interest and continued dreaming of the model.
“It was the second half of the 1980s, and the owner was asking for something around 18,000 cruzados for the car. I wanted to close the deal, but I didn’t have that much money“, Minervini stated.
Some time later, the talks resumed. The former pilot, determined to sell the coupe, proposed to sell it for half of the original asking price.
Even so, the amount was still above what the doctor could manage. Then the seller, showing more willingness to get rid of the car than to profit, accepted Minervini’s offer for less than half of the initial price. But there was one condition.
Maverick: A Symbol That Remains
The previous owner insisted that the Vasp badges were never to be removed from the Maverick’s glass. Sergio accepted the deal and kept the car exactly as he received it.
Along with the vehicle came some objects from the airline, preserving an emotional connection between the car, the pilot’s past, and the history of Brazilian aviation.
