Sony is preparing the best video game in history with the PS6 expected in 2027, a native handheld running current games, a PlayGo system similar to Smart Delivery, savings of up to 70% in storage, and a new architecture based on the unified SDK 13.

Rumors about PS6 gain strength with the promise of total integration between console and handheld, while Sony maintains official silence and bets on the expansion of digital services and PlayStation infrastructure.

Rumors published in recent days suggest that Sony is exploring a new phase for the PlayStation ecosystem, with a possible PS6 accompanied by a handheld device aimed at the same generation.

So far, however, the company has not officially announced a successor to the PS5, nor confirmed a release window, technical specifications, or the existence of a native handheld linked to the project.

What exists concretely at the moment is the company’s public strategy to expand the integration of services and digital infrastructure around the PlayStation brand.

In a corporate presentation for 2025, Sony stated that it is working on a new engagement platform based on the PSN backend, focusing on payment, data, security, and service expansion across various fronts of the group.

This move helps explain why part of the market has begun to interpret recent leaks as a sign of unification between home hardware and mobility.

Still, the interpretation available today depends on unidentified sources and interpretations made by specialized channels and websites, without public technical documentation from Sony to substantiate terms like “PlayGo” in the format described by the rumors.

Rumors about the PS6 and Sony’s handheld

Rumors indicate PS6 with integrated handheld and new strategy from Sony, but the company has not yet confirmed details about the next console.
Rumors indicate PS6 with integrated handheld and new strategy from Sony, but the company has not yet confirmed details about the next console.

The information that circulated most strongly came from the channel Moore’s Law Is Dead and was echoed by outlets like Omelete and Canaltech.

According to these reports, Sony would be working with a window between 2027 and 2028 for the next generation, in addition to studying a handheld device capable of running games locally, and not just via remote streaming.

The hypothesis gained traction because it touches on an old demand from part of the brand’s audience: returning to the handheld segment with a device that shares the catalog, progress, and infrastructure with the main console.

However, this scenario remains in the realm of speculation, as Sony has not made an equivalent announcement and its currently marketed handheld follows a different proposal.

PlayStation Portal and what is already official

The most verifiable data in this discussion lies in the PlayStation Portal, an accessory that Sony itself describes as a remote player for the PS5.

The company states on its official page that the device accesses games installed on the console via Wi‑Fi and also clarifies, in technical support, that its operation is linked to remote use, not to the local execution of titles like an independent handheld.

This distinction is crucial because it separates what is already on the market from what is being projected behind the scenes by analysts and leakers.

In other words, any mention of a next-generation handheld capable of running games natively needs to be treated, for now, as an unconfirmed rumor, without public basis equivalent to the official documentation of the Portal.

PS5’s power-saving mode enters the debate

Another point used to support the thesis of a handheld is the so-called Power Saver of the PS5.

Sony confirms in its support center that the console now has games compatible with power-saving mode, but the official material does not detail any relationship between this function and a future handheld device, nor does it mention cross-compatibility with a successor to the PS5.

Therefore, the interpretation that the feature would be a preliminary basis for another hardware arises more from the market’s reading of indirect clues than from validated information by the manufacturer.

Without public technical notes, official presentations, or developer communications available for consultation, any link between this mode and a supposed handheld remains unconfirmed independently.

The success of the Switch 2 pressures the market

The competitive backdrop helps to understand why these rumors have resonated.

Nintendo launched the Switch 2 on June 26, 2025, and the company reported that it sold over 3.5 million units in the first four days, making the device the fastest-selling hardware in the company’s history.

In this scenario, it makes sense that investors, developers, and the public are watching Sony for a stronger response to the hybrid and handheld market.

This does not mean, however, that there is confirmation of a plan to compete directly with the Switch 2 through a portable PS6, as this strategic motivation has also not been officially assumed by the company.

What can be stated with certainty today

Given the available information, the most accurate formulation is as follows: there are consistent rumors about Sony’s studies for the next generation of PlayStation, including the possibility of greater integration between formats and services, but there is no public confirmation of a release in 2027, nor of a native handheld, nor of architecture based on “unified SDK 13”, nor of a system called “PlayGo” in the terms detailed by the leaks.

There is also no secure basis in the consulted sources to support as fact the promise of up to 70% savings in storage or the idea that Sony has already instructed partners to mandatorily migrate their projects to a new standard connected to this supposed ecosystem.

The verifiable part of the story is different: Sony maintains the PS5 and PS5 Pro as the current centers of the PlayStation hardware business, sells the Portal as a remote use device, and works, in the corporate plan, to unify digital services and deepen the bond between players, creators, and online infrastructure.

The rest remains in the realm of expectations and market anticipation, without official validation so far.
