Starlink, billionaire Elon Musk’s satellite internet company, which also owns companies like Tesla and X (formerly Twitter), announced a discount offer on Starlink internet packages for Brazilian customers last Monday (April 8). The discount comes after the fallout against Brazil’s Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

The promotion, which started on April 8, cuts the price of Elon Musk’s company’s kit in half. The monthly fee for Starlink, excluding taxes, will be R$ 184 until April 30. The company’s announcement, as mentioned earlier, came after rising tensions between Elon Musk and Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes.

The businessman threatened to disregard the freeze on investigated accounts on the platform. In response, the judge ordered Elon Musk’s inclusion as a suspect in the investigation into digital militias.

According to a survey conducted by BBC News Brasil, Starlink is leading satellite internet in Brazil, especially in more isolated areas, such as the States of the Legal Amazon. By July of last year, 90% of the cities in the region used fixed broadband satellite providers from Elon Musk’s company.

In addition to including the billionaire in the digital militias investigation, Alexandre de Moraes also decided to investigate Elon Musk’s conduct. The minister wants to explore the crime of obstruction of justice, including in organized crime and incitement to crime.

Understand How the Frictions Between Elon Musk and Alexandre de Moraes Began

On Saturday, the 6th, the owner of Starlink questioned “why Minister Alexandre de Moraes demands so much censorship in Brazil.” The businessman replied to a post from the minister on X from January 11. Elon Musk’s comment followed accusations made by American journalist Michael Shellenberger on Wednesday (April 3).

According to the journalist, Moraes has led a broad crackdown on freedom of expression in Brazil. The critical comments escalated, and Musk stated that he is considering shutting down Twitter in Brazil and that he will reveal the minister’s demands that violate laws.

Elon Musk called the minister “tyrant,” “totalitarian,” and “draconian,” stating that he should “resign or suffer impeachment” from his position. On April 3, American journalist Michael Shellenberger published an alleged exchange of emails between officials from X’s legal department in Brazil from 2020 to 2022 discussing requests and court orders regarding user content.

The messages would show requests from various branches of the Brazilian Judiciary asking for personal data from users who used hashtags about the electoral process and content moderation.

Will Elon Musk Provide Free Internet?

In addition to the discount on Starlink, Elon Musk stated that he will provide free internet to all schools in Brazil if President Lula breaks contracts with Starlink. The statement was made on the evening of Monday, April 8, in response to Paulo Pimenta, Chief Minister of the Social Communication Secretariat (Secom), who stated that the federal government is considering suspending contracts with the company.

Starlink is the only company in the country capable of meeting the Ministry of Education’s (MEC) requirements to bring satellite internet to 40,000 schools in more remote areas, such as the States of the Legal Amazon. The schools are part of the National Connected Schools Strategy, which aims to provide internet to over 138,000 public educational institutions.
