After the Antonov An-225 Mriya was destroyed during the war between Russia and Ukraine, the gigantic Stratolaunch Roc claimed the title of the largest airplane in the world and, last Friday (13), set a record for time in the air. The model, in its 9th test, flew for six hours over the Mojave Desert, located in California, United States. The model has a 117-meter wingspan, larger than a football field, 15 meters in height, and 73 meters in length.
Stratolaunch Roc May Launch Various Hypersonic Vehicles
The largest airplane in the world is equipped with 6 Pratt & Whitney PW4056 turbofan engines with 252.4 kN. According to the CEO and President of Stratolaunch, Zachary Krevor, his incredible team continues to make progress on their testing schedule, and it is their hard work that brings the company closer than ever to safe separation and its first hypersonic flight tests.
These flights will be conducted, in the near future, for hypersonic testing, with the Roc carrying the company’s Talon-A testbed, a rocket-powered vehicle capable of carrying customizable payloads and achieving speeds above Mach 5.

During this seventh flight, a newly installed pylon was tested, along with the handling characteristics of the airplane.
Stratolaunch Roc and Its Commercial Use Next Year
Stratolaunch recently integrated the TA-0, the first hypersonic Talon-A test vehicle, indicating that the transport and launch of these vehicles may be tested soon. In parallel, the integration of the system for the hypersonic flight test vehicle TA-1 and a third, TA-2, is being carried out, with the latter being the company’s first reusable vehicle.
According to the company, the expectation is that hypersonic flight services from the largest airplane in the world will be available to market or government clients as early as next year.
Last year, the Stratolaunch Roc remained in flight for 3 hours and reached an altitude of 8,200 meters. This was the highest altitude the aircraft achieved throughout its development, raising the company’s expectations.
Krevor emphasized at the time that the flight performed is a success story of the Stratolaunch team’s ability to expand operational pace to the rhythm desired by their clients for frequent hypersonic flight testing.
The executive added that it was possible to demonstrate the performance of the current largest airplane in the world, necessary for its hypersonic vehicle Talon to reach its extensive design range of hypersonic conditions.
Meet the Antonov An-225 Mriya
The Antonov An-225, which was the largest airplane in the world for several years, was destroyed in February of last year at the onset of the war between Russia and Ukraine. The cargo plane was hit in the attack on Gostomel airport, near the capital Kyiv, and became one of the landmarks of the struggle between the countries, as it is considered a source of pride for Ukrainians.
The plane could not be removed from the site after the conflict began as it was undergoing maintenance following its last flight at the beginning of the same month. Another claim regarding what may have prevented its removal is that the runway where it was located had been damaged, making takeoff impossible.
The destruction of the airplane also raised questions about the future of the responsible company, Antonov. Due to the inability to operate flights from Kyiv, the company temporarily moved its base of operations to Leipzig, Germany.
