Scientists Reveal That Smartwatch Bands Made of Fluoroelastomer May Contain Harmful Chemicals to Health.

A study published in the scientific journal Environmental Science & Technology Letters revealed that the bands of many smartwatches and smartbands on the global market contain significant concentrations of substances known as “forever chemicals” or PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). These chemicals are highly resistant to weather and degradation, which earns them the name “forever chemicals.” Although they are durable, these compounds can contaminate the skin and pose risks to human health and the environment, as they accumulate in the body over time.

The Chemicals Present in Smartwatch Bands

These chemicals are found in smartwatch bands made with materials like fluoroelastomer, a type of silicone widely used by major wearable device manufacturers.

While smartwatches are designed to make people’s lives easier, the presence of chemicals in these products may affect the health of frequent users, especially during physical activities when sweat can further facilitate the absorption of these compounds through the skin.

The study analyzed different models of smartwatches, covering a variety of brands and price ranges.

The common point among the models was the material used in the bands: fluoroelastomer.

This material is popular for its durability and flexibility, being chosen by several major smartwatch manufacturers.

Fluoroelastomer is a type of silicone used to ensure comfort and durability in the bands, but the research pointed out that it contains a high concentration of perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA), a type of PFAS.

These chemicals are known to be difficult to remove from the environment and to accumulate in the body over time.

The researchers indicated that by using bands made of this material, users may be exposing themselves to risks.

These chemicals can be easily absorbed through the skin, especially during physical activities when sweat can accelerate this absorption process.

This prolonged exposure can lead to body contamination and increase the risks of health problems such as cancer and high cholesterol.

Possible Contamination Risks with Smartwatches

Although the researchers did not disclose the specific brands analyzed, they highlighted that smartwatch bands made with fluoroelastomer are common in products from popular brands.

These devices are available in various price ranges and are used by millions of people worldwide.

The problem is that, even with the popularity of these devices, the chemicals present in the bands can be harmful to health.

Perfluorohexanoic acid (PFHxA) found in the bands is one of the main chemicals present in many smartwatches and smartbands, and its presence can pose a contamination risk.

Despite its durability, this material and the chemicals it contains are a growing concern, especially because the chemicals can accumulate in the body over time.

Safer Alternatives to Avoid Contamination

To reduce the risks of exposure to chemicals, manufacturers are already offering safer alternatives.

Some of them have started to provide bands made with materials like nylon fabric or natural rubber, which are more reliable options for those who engage in physical activities and want to avoid exposure to fluoroelastomer.

These materials do not contain the forever chemicals found in traditional smartwatch bands.

Additionally, consumers can choose bands made of safer materials and avoid exposure to potentially harmful chemicals.

Although most bands made with fluoroelastomer are durable and comfortable, the risks of contamination and health issues associated with the constant use of devices with these compounds make it important to consider these alternatives.

Consumers should pay attention to the composition of the materials in their smartwatch bands.

The study reinforces that, if possible, it is recommended to avoid using bands made with fluoroelastomer, as they may contain chemicals that over time can contaminate the skin and body.

By opting for alternative materials, the risk of exposure to forever chemicals can be minimized, promoting a safer choice for health.
