The Navy Corvettes Are a Promise of Recovery for Brazil’s Shipbuilding Industry and Are Expected to Generate 8,000 Jobs at Oceana Shipyard in Itajaí, SC.
Good news for professionals in SC, 8,000 jobs are anticipated at Oceana Shipyard in Itajaí, after the Federal Court of Accounts (TCU) authorized the signing of the contract between the Águas Azuis consortium and the Brazilian Navy. Next year promises! The giant Modec estimates to open 800 job vacancies in Brazil in the offshore and corporate segment
The contract between the Águas Azuis consortium, which is formed by Brazilian Embraer and German Thyssen, and the Navy, envisions the construction of four Tamandaré-class corvettes.

The missile-launching corvettes are valued between US$ 1.6 billion and US$ 2 billion – a project that promises to give new life to the shipbuilding industry.
The Oceana shipyard located in Itajaí (SC), was chosen by the Águas Azuis consortium for the construction of the corvettes, which is expected to create over two thousand direct new jobs and another six thousand indirect jobs from the Brazilian Navy, as well as a supply chain throughout the state starting from 2021, when construction begins.

The new corvettes will have 31.6% of national content for the first ship, and 41% for the other three vessels, thus ensuring the transfer of technologies and training of local labor.
The forecast is that the vessels will be delivered between 2024 and 2028. With the approval from the TCU, the signing of the contract will be formalized after the turn of the year due to the laborious process required to complete the documents that support the contract.
“Itajaí and Santa Catarina Won the Mega Sena of the Century” This phrase comes from the former Brazilian Army General, Adhemar da Costa Machado Filho, who works on bridging the industry and the defense sector. He refers to the opportunities that will come with the construction of the Navy corvettes in the state.
The success of efforts in the corvette project presents an opportunity for a recovery of the Brazilian shipbuilding industry, shaken since the crisis that affected Petrobras due to Operation Lava Jato.
Currently, the sector is also engaged in other fronts, such as the construction of five submarines (one of them nuclear-powered) as part of the Submarine Development Program (Prosub)
Itajaí aims to become a defense shipbuilding cluster; there is no shortage of labor, as the region employed up to 10,000 workers during the oil boom when offshore shipyards were fully operational, and currently employs no more than 1,500.
The expectation is that the construction of the corvettes will bring new projects to the local industry. The Brazilian Navy plans to construct a new patrol vessel, which could be used for missions in Antarctica.
There is also space for international production: the armed forces of Paraguay and Chile have already shown interest in using the services of the Águas Azuis consortium.
