The GNA I Thermal Power Plant is Located at the Açu Port in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The Thermal Plant Set to Start Operations Will Be Fueled by Natural Gas
Yesterday, Wednesday (09/15), Aneel – the National Electric Energy Agency – authorized the start of operations, effective today (16), for the GNA I thermal power plant. The facilities are located at Açu Port in São João da Barra, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The power plant will be fueled by natural gas and will have the capacity to produce 1,338.30 megawatts (MW), enough to supply power to 4 million people. Start of Commercial Operation of the Thermal Power Plant Amid Water Crisis
The Director-General of Aneel, André Pepitone, states that the entry of this thermal power plant will be very beneficial for the sector, especially in the current circumstances. The energy generated by the power plant located at Açu Port will be injected into the system in the Southeast region, which has been the most affected by the drought in reservoirs, being enough to supply 4 million inhabitants, the executive highlights.
The water crisis caused by the lack of rain consequently leads to a reduction in water storage in hydroelectric reservoirs, and the National Electric System Operator (ONS) had to activate thermal power plants to ensure power supply to the country. However, the energy generated in thermal plants is more expensive and causes an increase in electricity bills. At the end of August, the government and the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) announced a new tariff flag level.

The Project of UTE GNA I at Açu Port
The GNA I Thermal Power Plant, located at Açu Port in the municipality of São João da Barra, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, consists of 3 gas turbines and 1 steam turbine that, together, will be responsible for generating 1.3 GW in a combined cycle, which contributes to increasing efficiency in energy generation.
The energy generated by the GNA I thermal power plant, authorized yesterday (09/15) by Aneel to begin commercial operation, will be connected to the SIN – the National Interconnected System – through a 345 kV Transmission Line, approximately 52 km long, at the Campos dos Goytacazes substation.

On the 6th, in news published by Valor Econômico, Eneva will build a thermal power plant in the interior of the state of Amazonas. The company, which purchased the Azulão natural gas exploration field in Silves, Amazonas, expects to invest R$ 100 to R$ 120 million, and the construction of the new plant is expected to be completed by next year. As a result, the thermal plant will be built near Azulão, where Eneva will drill new gas extraction wells.
According to the company’s Director of Operations, Lino Cançado, “We have been working on other land projects and also with gas from LNG and pre-salt. We have the capability to get projects off the ground, conduct basic engineering, market studies, participate in auctions, and implement and maintain (O&M) them. It is only natural that we have ambitions to be part of this.”
In Parnaíba, where the company has installed capacity for generating 1.4 GW, Cançado stated that there is an intention to renew contracts for thermal power plants. On the other hand, he explained that no new investments will be made in the region. In the Paraná Basin, where the company acquired four blocks in 2020, operations have no expected start date yet. However, the contract stipulates activities until 2029 for the minimum exploratory program in the region.
