The Possible Arrival of the 1.2 Turbo Engine from Stellantis. Would It Really Be a New Engine in Brazil for Peugeot and Citroën or a Reconfiguration of Plans?
There is discussion about the introduction of the 1.2 Turbo PureTech engine in Brazil. A new engine in Brazil for Peugeot and Citroën. The PureTech family previously had an aspirated version in the country. Currently, Stellantis is prioritizing its GSE (FireFly) engines and the upcoming Bio-Hybrid technology for the domestic market.
The PureTech engine family is not completely new in Brazil. An aspirated 1.2 Flex version equipped the previous generation Peugeot 208. This engine was known for its efficiency but had modest performance. Therefore, the name “PureTech” has already circulated here.
Global Evolution of the 1.2 PureTech: Belt vs. Chain

The 1.2 PureTech engine is a three-cylinder engine. It was developed with a focus on efficiency and low emissions. The first generations used an oil-bathed timing belt. This system caused durability issues in Europe. The belt could degrade prematurely, leading to serious failures and recalls.

In response, Stellantis launched the third generation (Gen3) starting in 2023. The main change was the adoption of a timing chain. This change aims for greater robustness and reliability. The Gen3 also faced a small initial assembly setback, which has already been resolved by the company.
Stellantis Brazil Strategy: Focus on GSE and Bio-Hybrid Engines
In Brazil, Stellantis prioritizes the GSE (FireFly) engine family. Engines such as the 1.0 aspirated Firefly and the 1.0 Turbo T200 Flex equip recent launches from Peugeot and Citroën. These powertrains are locally produced in Betim (MG). They are already adapted to Flex Fuel technology.
The future of Stellantis in Brazil strongly points towards Bio-Hybrid technology. This initiative will electrify the current range of turbo flex GSE engines. The goal is to meet emissions standards and decarbonization targets.
1.2 Turbo PureTech: A New Engine in Brazil?
A turbocharged version of the 1.2 PureTech would be new for Peugeot and Citroën in the country. The Gen3 with a timing chain would also be a novelty.
However, this possibility seems to diverge from Stellantis’ regional strategy. Industry information indicates that Latin America is expected to continue with GSE engines. Europe and the Maghreb would receive the 1.2 PureTech Gen3. The 1.2 Turbo PureTech already exists in Argentina, equipping the imported Peugeot 208 GT.
Thus, a large-scale launch of the 1.2 Turbo PureTech in Brazil seems unlikely in the short term.
Peugeot and Citroën Engine Range in the Country
The introduction of the 1.2 Turbo PureTech as a new engine in Brazil for Peugeot and Citroën faces Stellantis’ established local strategy. The focus on GSE engines and Bio-Hybrid technology is clear and supported by local production.
Unless there is a significant strategic shift or undisclosed plans, the massive arrival of the 1.2 PureTech in Brazil is questionable. Niche applications through importation cannot be completely ruled out, but they lack official confirmation from Stellantis.
