1.2 Turbo PureTech engine from Stellantis: Unprecedented in Brazil for Peugeot/Citroën?

The possible arrival of Stellantis' 1.2 turbo engine. It would really be a new engine in Brazil for Peugeot and Citroën or a reconfiguration of plans?

The introduction of the 1.2 Turbo PureTech engine in Brazil is being discussed. This is a new engine for Peugeot and Citroën in Brazil. The PureTech family already had an aspirated version in the country. Stellantis is currently prioritizing its GSE (FireFly) engines and future Bio-Hybrid technology for the national market.

The PureTech engine family is not completely new in Brazil. An aspirated 1.2 Flex version equipped the previous generation Peugeot 208. This engine was known for its efficiency, but had modest performance. Therefore, the name “PureTech” has already circulated here.

Global evolution of the 1.2 PureTech: belt vs. chain

1.2 Turbo PureTech engine from Stellantis: Unprecedented in Brazil for Peugeot/Citroën?

The 1.2 PureTech engine is a three-cylinder. It was developed with a focus on efficiency and low emissions. The first generations used an oil-immersed timing belt. This system caused durability problems in Europe. The belt could degrade prematurely, leading to serious failures and recalls.

In response, Stellantis launched the third generation (Gen3) starting in 2023. The main change was the adoption of a timing chain. This change seeks greater robustness and reliability. Gen3 also had a small initial assembly setback, which the company has already resolved.

Stellantis Brazil Strategy: Focus on GSE and Bio-Hybrid Engines

In Brazil, Stellantis prioritizes the GSE (FireFly) engine family. Engines such as the 1.0 Firefly naturally aspirated and the 1.0 Turbo T200 Flex are used in recent launches by Peugeot and Citroën. These engines are produced locally, in Betim (MG). They are already adapted to Flex Fuel technology.

Stellantis’ future in Brazil points strongly to Bio-Hybrid technology. This initiative will electrify the current range of GSE turbo flex engines. The aim is to meet emissions standards and decarbonization goals.

1.2 Turbo PureTech: a new engine in Brazil?

A turbocharged version of the 1.2 PureTech would be new for Peugeot and Citroën in the country. The Gen3 with timing chain would also be a novelty.

However, this possibility seems to diverge from Stellantis' regional strategy. Industry information indicates that Latin America should continue with the GSE engines. Europe and the Maghreb would receive the 1.2 PureTech Gen3. The 1.2 Turbo PureTech already exists in Argentina, equipping the imported Peugeot 208 GT.

Therefore, a large-scale launch of the 1.2 Turbo PureTech in Brazil seems unlikely in the short term.

Peugeot and Citroën engines in the country

The introduction of the 1.2 Turbo PureTech as a new engine in Brazil for Peugeot and Citroën challenges Stellantis' consolidated local strategy. The focus on GSE engines and Bio-Hybrid technology is clear and supported by local production.

Unless there is a significant strategic change or plans not yet disclosed, the massive arrival of the 1.2 PureTech in Brazil is questionable. Niche applications, via import, cannot be completely ruled out, but they lack official confirmation from Stellantis.

True. Volkswagen is bringing the TSI 1.5 to use here, the same one used in Europe.

The engine was good, the only drawback was the oil-soaked rubber belt. However, if it comes with a metal chain, it will be better than the 3-cylinder FIAT also with a chain.

If they removed the air conditioning compressor from the engine and placed it in an electric one with a battery rechargeable by the alternator, the car would consume even less.
