The Engine of the New S10 2025, with Recalibration for 207 Hp and 52 Kgfm of Torque, Chevrolet’s Pickup Focuses on Surpassing the Hilux but Foregoes Important Technologies

The Chevrolet S10 arrived for the 2025 line with a clear mission: to dethrone the competition and become the medium pickup with the strongest four-cylinder engine in Brazil. The main weapon for this battle is the engine of the new S10 2025, the well-known 2.8 Duramax, which has been recalibrated to deliver more power and, crucially, more torque than its main rival, the Toyota Hilux.

Launched in April 2024, this mid-cycle update brought not only more strength but also a completely modernized interior, a new design, and a surprising improvement in comfort. However, to keep the price competitive, General Motors made strategic choices, leaving out technology items that are already standard in other pickups in the segment.

What Changed in the 2.8 Duramax Engine?

The big trump card of the pickup lies under the hood. The engine of the new S10 2025 is an evolution of the acclaimed 2.8 turbo diesel, now featuring new electronic management. As a result, power increased to 207 hp and torque reached 52 kgfm, a figure that places it at the top of its category.

However, the star of the change is the new eight-speed automatic transmission, which replaces the old six-speed model. This allows the engine to operate more efficiently, optimizing both acceleration and fuel consumption. GM claims that the new Engine Control Unit (ECU) features “artificial intelligence” that manages the systems faster and more accurately.

Is the New S10 Faster than the Hilux?

The short answer is yes. Chevrolet’s strategy focused on surpassing the competition’s numbers, and it succeeded. The new S10 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 9.4 seconds, an improvement of a full second compared to the previous model.

In the “torque war,” the victory also goes to the S10. Its 52 kgfm exceeds the 50.9 kgfm of the Toyota Hilux, translating to more strength for heavy work and stronger speed recovery. In addition to performance, efficiency has also improved: the manufacturer claims a fuel economy of up to 13%, with averages reaching 11.4 km/l on the highway.

Beyond the Engine of the New S10 2025, the Revolution in Comfort and Design

If strength was the goal, the improvement in comfort was the big surprise of the 2025 line. Chevrolet recalibrated the entire suspension, making the S10 one of the most comfortable pickups to drive daily, absorbing road irregularities much better.

The exterior has also been completely renewed in the front, now inspired by the North American Chevrolet Colorado pickup. The interior represents a generational leap, highlighted by the new digital dashboard and the 11-inch MyLink multimedia system with wireless connectivity. In the top-of-the-line High Country version, the two-tone leather upholstery reinforces the perception of a more sophisticated vehicle.

To enable so many improvements without a prohibitive price increase, GM needed to make concessions. The most significant is the absence of more advanced driver assistance technologies (ADAS). The model does not offer Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), which is already present in the top versions of the Hilux and the Ford Ranger.

For off-road enthusiasts, the lack of rear differential locking is also a disadvantage. Additionally, the base price, which was attractive at launch (R$ 302,900 for the High Country), has already seen significant adjustments. In June 2025, the price of the same version surpasses R$ 334,000, making the cost-benefit analysis even more crucial for the buyer.
