The World’s First Offshore Wind Farm Reached 78 GWh of Installed Capacity. The Project Was Fully Commissioned in 2020 and Belongs to a Commercial Alliance of Several Companies.
The first semi-submersible offshore wind farm in the world, called Windfloat Atlantic, has been operational for two full years, according to a report from offfshorewind.biz published last Friday (27). The 25 MW wind farm closed the last year with an electricity production of 78 GWh, achieving a 5% increase in production compared to the previous year.
OW Has Accumulated Experience
The structure of the offshore wind farm was fully commissioned in 2020 and developed by the consortium formed by the joint venture between Engie, EDPR, Repsol, and Principle Power, called OW. The Country Manager for Southern Europe and Project Director of WindFloat Atlantic, José Pinheiro, stated in a statement that every day with the offshore wind farm in operation is another day of acquired knowledge for the joint venture, something very valuable that can make a difference in future offshore commercial projects.
The executive adds that, through the accumulated experience, OW will not only be able to make fewer mistakes but will also bring optimizations and deliver more benefits to those who will benefit directly or indirectly from its future offshore floating commercial projects. The success of the offshore wind farm shows Portugal’s potential, reflected in the annual availability of the wind farm, which was close to 93%.

The project has a maintenance and operation base at the port of the municipality of Viana do Castelo, Portugal. At this location, the WindFloat Atlantic team has real-time information from the wind farm and controls the various issues that may arise and may eventually require intervention on-site.
Wind Farm Has Three Platforms
So far, the project has surpassed the production expectations set for it. It is now moving towards many other impressive milestones, with the expectation of operating for 25 years.
Currently, the wind farm has three platforms, each with a Vestas turbine of 8.4 MW. These structures are anchored with chains on the seabed and connected to an onshore substation in Viana do Castelo via a 20 km cable. It is a good time for offshore wind farms, as last September, Hornsea 2, the largest offshore wind farm in the world located in the North Sea, began operations.
The project was commissioned by the United Kingdom in its attempt to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050. This project was the largest offshore wind farm in the world to achieve fully operational status in 2020. Two years later, the Hornsea 2 project went live and claimed the right to brag as the largest offshore wind farm in the world.
This project is located 89 km off the coast of Yorkshire and is adjacent to the Hornsea 1 project, being developed to harness the strong winds of the North Sea and generate renewable energy.
Brazil Receives Billion-Dollar Investments in the Wind Energy Sector
The National Bank for Economic and Social Development (BNDES) approved earlier this year financing for Pan American Energy to develop a new wind farm. The bank will also finance a wind energy complex and a solar plant in the states of Bahia and Minas Gerais.
In total, Pan American will invest R$ 3 billion in the wind farm, which will have an installed capacity of 423 MW. The bank’s participation, which will make total investments exceeding R$ 10 billion, will be made through the BNDES Finem program.
