Kyuho Song and Boa Oh, graduates from the Seoul Institute of Design, are the developers of the technology that dispenses with solar panels. They presented the idea at the Dubai Design Week 2022, a festival that brings together designers from over 26 countries to showcase around 135 projects in various categories. This device was developed so that users can take it anywhere and place it in any window exposed to sunlight, harnessing solar energy to charge cell phones, tablets, and headphones.
Simple and Practical: Just Plug It in a Window and You’re Good to Go!
The process is simple. The ‘solar socket’ must be fixed to any window using its suction cups to receive direct sunlight to generate free electricity. In this way, the small solar panels on the back will charge the internal battery. Apparently, the model is made of plastic. The solar socket also features a plug on one side and a solar panel with a suction cup to fit perfectly on the windows on the other side.
The device converts solar energy into free electricity so that users can utilize it in their daily activities. It takes about 5 to 8 hours to fully charge. The solar socket works with 1,000 mAh, a number that allows it to power a 60-watt bulb for 20 hours.
However, future updates should exceed its capacity. Its designers have held the patent since 2010, but they are experiencing difficulties in executing internal production and technical problems that prevent the project from advancing. According to Jyuho Song, they hope everything will be resolved soon.

Its inventors aimed to develop an intuitive item that everyone could use effortlessly. Something simple and easy to carry in a jacket pocket to charge a phone and other small devices independently. This invention was named Window Socket.
Due to being a small and simple device, it is necessary to keep in mind the solar panels integrated within. The solar socket does not have the potential to produce a lot of amperage in the electrical current converted by sunlight when placed in windows, generating free electricity.
The youths from Seoul National University developed this device with a clear objective: the use of cell phones today on the planet is enormous; in fact, the estimate is that in large cities there are three cell phones for every inhabitant.
