Paraná Leads in Clean Energy Focused on Photovoltaic Technology
Paraná has stood out as a leader in Distributed Generation in Southern Brazil, driving the use of renewable energy sources, with a particular emphasis on solar energy. To date, the state is the fourth largest producer of solar energy in the country, with a share of 9.4% of the national total, reaching a capacity of 2,627.3 MW according to recent data from the National Electric Energy Agency (Aneel) from 2024.
Growth of Distributed Generation
The growth of Distributed Generation (GD) in Paraná was notable between 2022 and 2023, with a 38.8% increase in its capacity. This increase is one of the largest recorded in Brazil and is largely attributed to incentives from the State Government, through the RenovaPR program, which mainly benefits small and medium-sized agricultural properties. Over 7,500 rural producers already benefit directly from this program.
Guto Silva, Secretary of State Planning, emphasized the need to diversify the energy matrices beyond traditional Centralized Generation, which is dominated by the Itaipu power plant. He highlighted that the government is accelerating the adoption of alternatives such as solar energy and biogas, which also have significant potential in the state.

While heat evaporates water from reservoirs and countries seek new areas for clean energy, Morocco is testing floating solar panels that function as an energy lid and also generate electricity.

China occupies the desert with a 2 GW solar power plant in Inner Mongolia, installs elevated panels that create shade and humidity over the sand, and transforms a 2.96 billion kWh per year farm into an unexpected weapon against desertification.

A single 560W solar panel was put to the test to try and power an entire house, and the test result shows how much a giant module can truly power a refrigerator, fan, TV, and everyday appliances in daily use.
Investments in Photovoltaic Energy
Recent investments include the allocation of R$ 14.6 million for the creation of six new solar parks in the state starting in 2024. These parks will not only meet the energy needs of all 412 units of the Rural Development Institute of Paraná (IDR-Paraná) but will also promote the energy self-sufficiency of the state.
“The strategy involves transforming areas of state heritage, such as agricultural colleges, into solar farms, which will not only supply the state’s consumption but also allow Paraná to move towards total sustainability, serving as a model for sustainable practices,” Silva added.
Highlights of the GD South Forum
The growth of renewable energies will be one of the central themes at the 23rd edition of the Regional Distributed Generation Forum (GD South Forum), which takes place this month. The event, organized in partnership with the Federation of Industries of the State of Paraná (FIEP), TECPAR, and Sebrae, will be held at the FIEP headquarters, bringing together experts and stakeholders to discuss advancements and challenges in the region.
Participants will have the opportunity to update themselves on the latest trends and innovations in the sector, as well as explore new business possibilities. Interested parties can still register through the official event website.
The GD South Forum not only reflects Paraná’s commitment to renewable energy but also highlights the crucial role the state plays in advancing micro and mini generation of energy in Brazil.
