Toyota Admits Corolla Cross Has Conservative Design And Promises Radical Changes In Next Generation To Attract Demanding European Market
Despite being a sales leader in Brazil, the Toyota Corolla Cross faces difficulties in the European market, where its commercial performance has fallen short of expectations.
According to a report published by the newspaper Automotive News, the automaker itself admits that the design of the mid-size SUV is one of the main factors driving consumers away on the continent.
The revelation was made by Andrea Carlucci, head of the marketing department at Toyota in Europe.

In an interview with the newspaper, the executive stated that the Corolla Cross does not meet the aesthetic standards expected by Europeans.
“We do not have a Corolla Cross suitable for Europe, as it is a product made to be global,” he declared.
For him, the model needs to incorporate more vibrant and bold elements to win over the local audience.
“If we bring more European enthusiasm, sales will increase,” he added.

Toyota SUV Loses Ground In Europe
The low performance in European dealerships reinforces the criticisms.
In the first four months of 2025, the Corolla Cross sold only 11,259 units in Europe.
This figure represents a decline of 14% compared to the same period in 2024.
The comparison with the Toyota C-HR, a model with bolder lines and a sporty look, further highlights the challenge.
The C-HR sold 41,950 units in the same timeframe, achieving a growth of 9.6% compared to the previous year.
This contrast illustrates the preference of European consumers for SUVs with striking appearances.
To try to reverse this trend, Toyota launched the 2025 line with specific changes for the European market.
One of the highlights was the introduction of the GR Sport version.
This configuration features a redesigned front grille, a more aggressive bumper, and an interior with sporty bucket seats and red accents.
Next Generation Of Corolla Cross Will Have Regional Identity
According to information from the newspaper Automotive News, Toyota plans to redesign the Corolla Cross for the next generation.
The expectation is that the new model will hit the international market in 2027.
The automaker will maintain the TNGA (Toyota New Global Architecture) platform but will allow each region to develop its own visual characteristics, tailored to local tastes.
“We designed the platform so that each market can adapt the body design,” explained Carlucci.
This means that while the European version may have a more aggressive and futuristic look, other regions, like Asia, will likely keep a more conservative approach.
Corolla Cross Leads Among Medium SUVs In Brazil
While the Corolla Cross faces criticism for being “bland” in Europe, in Brazil the scenario is quite different.
From January to May 2025, the model led the medium SUV segment with 24,755 units sold.
This number places it ahead of the Jeep Compass, its main competitor, which registered 22,986 sales in the same period.
The formula for Brazilian success seems to be linked to a balance between technology, performance, and reliability.
The Corolla Cross is equipped with an engine that delivers 175 horsepower and a simulated CVT with up to 10 gears, providing good performance coupled with low fuel consumption.
It achieves up to 17.7 km/l, according to factory data.
Additionally, the model stands out for having a flex hybrid version, one of the pioneers in the category.
This combination reinforces the Corolla Cross’s position as one of the most sought-after options by Brazilian consumers looking for energy efficiency and versatility.
Toyota Prepares Renovation For Global SUV
The statements from Toyota about the future of the Corolla Cross indicate a significant shift in the brand’s global strategy.
With declining sales in Europe and criticisms of its conservative style, the automaker signals it is willing to adapt its portfolio to the aesthetic demands of each market.
This flexibility in design development, allowed by the TNGA platform, could be decisive for the future of the Corolla Cross in the competitive global SUV market.
The expectation is that with more personalized and bold visuals, the model will regain ground in Europe and strengthen its presence in other regions.
But after all, will the redesign of the Corolla Cross win over demanding European consumers? And in Brazil, will the bolder look be well accepted, or could it push away those seeking sobriety?
