The Toyota Etios, known for its robustness, also accumulates complaints about inadequate sealing, peeling paint, and finishing failures. Problems such as soaked flooring and peeling steering wheels are common. It is worth considering these defects before deciding to buy.
The Toyota Etios is not remembered for its beauty or high-quality finish, but its robustness is widely recognized. With simple lines and a modest design, the hatch and sedan were launched in 2012 in Brazil, aiming at the economic compact segment, a relatively new market for Toyota.
The models were equipped with 1.3 engines producing 90 hp and 12.8 kgfm of torque, and 1.5 engines producing 96.5 hp and 13.9 kgfm. In 2016, these specifications were updated to 98 hp and 107 hp, respectively, with the addition of a four-speed automatic transmission option.
However, in 2019, due to low sales and the arrival of the Yaris, the Etios was discontinued. Despite leaving a reputation for good mechanical tuning and high durability, the model accumulates various complaints about common defects.

With a mild hybrid system of 48 V, 176 hp and a price of R$ 175,990 in the Sahara version, the new Jeep Renegade changes mostly on the inside, improves slightly in fuel consumption, and remains almost the same car.
-
With a 293.5 cm³ engine and a range of up to 400 km with a 14.1-liter tank, the Honda CB 300F Twister 2026 has up to 24.7 hp, an initial price of R$ 25,150, and already exceeds R$ 29,000 in the Fipe Table.

With a 1.3 engine, nearly 700 km of range, and Turbo 200, the Fiat model surpasses Polo, Tera HB20, and Onix, becoming the best-selling car in March; see the numbers for the Fiat Strada and others.

The Honda Fit has been discontinued for years, but the 2018 model is worth more today in the Fipe table than it cost brand new, proving that this used car, valued with a 1.5 i-VTEC engine and Magic Seat, only increases in price.
Main Issues with the Toyota Etios
Sealing
One of the most common problems reported by Toyota Etios owners is inadequate sealing. On rainy days, many report that the passenger side floor gets soaked, leading to the development of a bad smell inside the vehicle. Other owners who drive on dirt roads have noticed excessive dust entering the interior of the car.

Peeling Paint
Another curious and frequently mentioned defect is peeling paint, especially in the pearlescent white color. Many owners reported that when seeking a solution from Toyota, their warranties were denied. There have been cases where the vehicle was repainted, but the problem persisted. Although most complaints are from white cars, other colors have also had similar issues.
The finish is another weak point of the Etios. Being Toyota’s simplest model at the time, the car suffered from several flaws in this aspect. Among the complaints, peeling steering wheels, melted buttons after sun exposure, and failures in the instrument panel stand out.
Finishing
Positive Points
Despite the reported problems, the Toyota Etios also has positive points that deserve to be highlighted. Its mechanical robustness and durability are often praised, making it a reliable option for those seeking a sturdy vehicle.
Additionally, the low fuel consumption is a significant attraction, providing savings in daily use. The Etios also offers a good driving experience and easy maintenance, factors that contribute to a satisfactory driving experience.
That said, here’s a question for you, reader: Would you buy a Toyota Etios knowing about these issues? Share your opinion in the comments!
