Toyota Announced on Wednesday (11) That It Will Suspend Production at the Sorocaba Plant in the Inland State of São Paulo

Toyota do Brasil announced on Wednesday (11) the temporary halt of production at the Sorocaba plant, São Paulo. The Porto Feliz (SP) unit is also expected to be partially affected, according to the press office. As reported, the halt will occur due to a lack of inputs and production will be suspended between August 18 and 27. Halt Due to Lack of Inputs

At the Sorocaba plant, located in the inland state of São Paulo, the Yaris (hatch and sedan), Corolla Cross, and Etios (only for export) models are produced. The Porto Feliz unit is responsible for producing the 1.3L and 1.5L engines for the Yaris and Etios and the 2.0L TNGA engine for the Corolla and Corolla Cross.

In a statement, the company informed that “despite all the efforts made over time to manage the lack of inputs affecting the global supply chain caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, at this moment the halt is inevitable.”

The employees at the plant in the state of São Paulo who are affected will enter collective vacation during this period, with a return to activities scheduled for August 30. The other Toyota units in Brazil, located in São Bernardo do Campo and Indaiatuba, continue to operate normally.

The Toyota Plant in São Paulo Is Considered the Cleanest Factory of the Brand in the World

Toyota do Brasil celebrated on Tuesday (10) the 5th anniversary of the Porto Feliz plant, São Paulo, highlighting how the factory is a global reference in sustainability within the group. Being the only Toyota plant in Latin America and the Caribbean that produces engines for automobiles, the Porto Feliz plant is considered the cleanest in the world.

The factory follows the same Ecofactory concept used at the Sorocaba (SP) unit. The principle is based on reducing the emissions of polluting waste generated each year, such as volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and CO2 emissions.

Moreover, the concept also emphasizes rainwater reuse and the conservation of native forest areas. Since it was built, the Toyota plant in SP has developed about 20 environmental activities, which included a 56% reduction in waste, 42% reduction in water usage in the production process, and a 32% reduction in CO2 emissions according to the automaker.

The Japanese multinational Toyota and the City Hall of Sorocaba, in the state of São Paulo, signed a protocol of intentions regarding a R$ 1 billion investment in the company’s plant in the municipality, located in the inland state. The investment by the automaker will be aimed at modernizing the production line for the Corolla Cross, the company’s new bet. The estimate from the company and the city hall is that 800 new jobs will be created, including 200 direct and 600 indirect.

The signing of the protocol of intentions took place at a ceremony at the Municipal Palace on Friday morning. The ceremony followed a meeting of representatives from Toyota, including the company’s president in Brazil, Rafael Chang, the mayor Rodrigo Manga, and municipal secretaries of Sorocaba, São Paulo.

Rafael Chang, president of Toyota in Brazil, states that the company is studying the investment plan in Brazil, but he refrained from giving details about the next steps of the Japanese multinational in the city. According to Rafael, it is a difficult moment due to the pandemic, but aims for the medium and long term. The president of Toyota in Brazil also emphasizes that he believes in the potential of the Brazilian market, the possibility of export, and mentions that the discussion with the mayor was about the predictability they hope to have for the future, as investments are made for four to five years.
