Evaluation of Return of the 3rd Shift at the Plant in São Paulo
In a statement published by Jornal Cruzeiro do Sul, Toyota Brazil says that the company has been constantly evaluating various internal and market scenarios to ensure the sustainability of its operations in the country. Therefore, it confirms that it is in discussions with the union to analyze the feasibility of the third shift at the Sorocaba plant starting in 2022. The number of potential new job vacancies has not yet been confirmed.
The management of Toyota had decided to adopt the third shift in Brazil in 2018, something rare in the automaker’s factories, which is why the Japanese parent company took time to be convinced to authorize the measure. At the time, the extra shift was considered the most viable solution, without the need to invest in a new plant, to meet the anticipated growth of regional markets and the launch of another model produced in Sorocaba, the Yaris hatch and sedan, launched in the second half of 2018, which joined the Etios (also with two body styles) already produced at the facility since 2012.

Cause of the Previous Closure of the 3rd Shift of Toyota
The main reason for the closure of the third shift at the plants in Sorocaba and Porto Feliz was the weak performance in the brand’s exports, primarily affected by the crisis in Argentina, the largest importer of Brazilian automobiles from the Japanese brand at the time.
At the Toyota plant in Sorocaba, the third shift was created in 2018 and began to operate effectively in November of that year, in order to accommodate the production of the two models from the plant: the veteran Etios and the then-new Yaris, both with two body styles, hatchback and sedan.
