On Social Media, President Presses Urgency on Zelensky and Complains About Three-Week Delay in Signing Strategic Partnership Between Washington and Kiev.
The President of the United States, Donald Trump, publicly criticized Ukraine this Friday, 25, for not finalizing an agreement on rare earths with Washington. In a post on the social media platform Truth Social, Trump urged Volodymyr Zelensky’s government to act urgently and stated that the signing of the document has been delayed for at least three weeks.
“Ukraine, led by Volodymyr Zelensky, has not signed the final documents of the very important Rare Earth agreement with the United States. There is at least a three-week delay. I hope it is signed IMMEDIATELY,” Trump wrote while traveling to Rome, where he attended the pope’s funeral.
The pressure comes at a time when Trump is approaching his 100th day in his new term as President of the United States. According to sources cited by CNN, the President has been frustrated with the pace of negotiations involving Ukraine, both economically and in efforts to mediate a peace agreement with Russia.

Rare Earth Agreement is Considered Strategic by the U.S.
In February, Donald Trump classified the rare earth agreement with Ukraine as essential for the national security of the United States. The treaty stipulates that Washington will have facilitated access to the strategic minerals extracted from Ukrainian territory, deemed crucial for sectors such as technology, defense, and renewable energy.
The goal of the U.S. government is to strengthen the supply of these minerals outside the influence of markets controlled by China, the world’s leading producer of rare earths. For Ukraine, the signing of the agreement is seen as an opportunity to consolidate support from the United States and obtain additional security guarantees amid the conflict with Russia.
Trump Says Peace Negotiations are Progressing
Despite the public pressure regarding the economic agreement, Trump stated that the “work on the Peace Agreement between Russia and Ukraine is going well” and added that “success seems to be in the future.” The initiative to mediate a ceasefire or diplomatic solution to the war has been one of the current U.S. government’s priorities.
Since the beginning of the year, Trump has been in contact with European leaders and has sent diplomatic representatives to try to unlock the peace talks. However, sources close to the White House point out that the lack of concrete progress thus far has generated dissatisfaction within the government.
Rare Earths Gain Importance in Geopolitical Dispute
The interest of the United States in securing rare earth agreements with allied countries has increased in recent years. These minerals are essential for manufacturing products such as smartphones, batteries, turbines, and high-tech military equipment.
Global dependence on China in this sector has led Washington to seek strategic alternatives. Ukraine, which has significant reserves of rare earths, is viewed as a potentially crucial partner in this diversification effort.
For the Trump administration, ensuring access to these raw materials also represents a way to reinforce the economic and military position of the United States against strategic rivals.
Pressure Mounts on Kiev
Donald Trump’s public pressure on Ukraine signals the importance that the U.S. government places on the rare earth agreement. At the same time, it highlights the complexity of the political negotiations that involve not only economic interests but also the context of the war with Russia.
The expectation is that, in light of the pressure, Kiev will expedite the signing process to consolidate American support and reinforce its own international security demands.
