In A Radical Strategy Change, US President Announces Deal To Sell Advanced Weapons To Kiev, Funded By NATO, And Gives A 50-Day Deadline For Putin To Negotiate A Ceasefire.
In a statement that surprised the international scene, the US president, Donald Trump, announced a new and aggressive policy to support Ukraine. The strategy, revealed this Monday (14), involves the sale of billions of dollars in state-of-the-art American armaments, but with an innovative condition: it will be the European NATO allies who will foot the bill.
The measure represents a 180-degree turn in Trump’s rhetoric, who previously classified aid to Kiev as a waste of money. Now, he opens the doors to the American arsenal and, at the same time, issues a direct ultimatum to Vladimir Putin, establishing a 50-day deadline for Russia to accept a ceasefire, under the threat of devastating sanctions.
The Deal: US Produces, Europe Pays
Alongside NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte, Trump detailed the plan at the White House. “We make the best equipment, the best missiles, the best of everything. We made a deal today where we will send them weapons, and they will pay for them,” the president stated.

This new mode of support completely changes the dynamics of Western involvement in the conflict. As it is a sale and not a donation, the chances of interruption in supply decrease, and the range of weapons available to Ukraine drastically expands, now including offensive armaments.

- Long-Range Missiles: Diplomatic sources indicate that long-range missiles for the HIMARS systems are also on the negotiation table.
The Ultimatum To Putin And The Threat Of New Sanctions
Despite the opening of the arsenal, the direct pressure on Moscow did not please all allies. Trump limited himself to giving a 50-day deadline for Putin to accept to negotiate a ceasefire. Otherwise, the US will impose 100% sanctions on Russia.
Additionally, the American president endorsed a bill pending in Congress that provides for secondary sanctions of up to 500% on countries that continue to do business with Russia, such as Brazil, China, and India.
European and Ukrainian leaders, however, deemed the deadline too long, arguing that it gives Putin more time to continue his attacks.
The Change In Trump’s Strategy
The new stance of Donald Trump marks a break from his campaign rhetoric. Visibly frustrated with the lack of progress in negotiations with Putin, which he classified as “empty promises,” Trump now adopts a more pragmatic and commercial approach.
By selling the weapons instead of donating them, he not only ensures a continuous flow of aid to Ukraine but also generates billions in revenue for the American defense industry. As summarized by an analyst, the message to Ukraine’s allies is clear: “Basically, from now on, just write the check and choose the weapon.”
And you, what do you think of Trump’s new strategy? Is selling weapons and the ultimatum to Putin the way to peace or could it escalate the conflict even further? Leave your opinion in the comments.
