Bessent is leading the latest round of negotiations with China on behalf of the United States. He stated that TikTok would likely be one of the subjects discussed.
“China is paying a lot in tariffs,” Trump told reporters on Sunday.
On Monday, Trump made a post on Truth Social about the meeting. “The great Trade Meeting in Europe between the United States of America and China went VERY WELL! It will be concluding soon,” he said.
Deal on TikTok in the US is Suggested
The Chinese social network has a deadline to divest its assets in the US. This deadline expires this Wednesday (17).
Trump suggested that a deal was reached regarding the company. “A deal was also made regarding a ‘certain’ company that the young people in our country wanted to save very much,” he said. “They will be very happy!”
The American president concluded by saying that he will speak to President Xi on Friday.
The History of the Law and Trump’s Delays
A bipartisan bill was passed by Congress. The law, signed by former President Joe Biden, banned TikTok in the United States. The ban would be lifted if its China-based owner sold its stake in the American assets.
At the end of his first term, Trump advocated for the TikTok ban. This policy was never approved, but Biden eventually supported and enacted the measure.
Trump’s opinion changed. He believed that the social media app contributed to his electoral victory in 2024.
TikTok became temporarily unavailable in the United States on January 18. The Foreign Adversaries Risk Management Act went into effect on the 19th.
On January 19, a day before taking office for his second term, Trump stated that he would sign an executive action. The measure would ensure that American companies would not be penalized for hosting TikTok.
The decree, signed on January 20, postponed the enforcement of the law by 75 days. Trump extended the deadline again in June. The most recent deadline was pushed to September 17. It was expected that Trump would delay the deadline again if a deal was not reached.
The law grants the president wide latitude to enforce the ban. Critics, however, argue that Trump’s delays frustrated the will of Congress.
Trump Criticizes European Sanctions Against Russia
Still on trade issues, the president made comments about Europe. Trump said that Europe continues importing oil from Russia.
According to him, this shows that the sanctions imposed on Moscow are not tough enough.
“I am willing to impose sanctions, but they [Europe] will have to tighten their sanctions based on what I am doing,” he commented.
