A Corridor With 39.5 Kilometers and a Tunnel of Nearly 10 Km Promises to Bring Medellín Closer to the Sea and Change Cargo Routes
Colombia is advancing with the Toyo Tunnel, a structure with nearly 10 kilometers that is set to redefine the movement of people and goods between the interior and the coast.
The project aims for a direct impact on national logistics, reducing the travel time between Medellín and Urabá by 4.5 hours, opening a faster route to the Caribbean ports.
The report was published by Gizmodo.

Nueva Vía al Mar, Agreement of 2015, Aims for Access to Caribbean Ports
The Toyo Tunnel is part of the Nueva Vía al Mar, a megaproject signed in 2015 between the Department of Antioquia and the Antioquia al Mar Consortium.
The proposal aims to bring Medellín closer to Urabá Antioqueño, facilitating direct access to the Caribbean ports and strengthening the connection with the Pacific and Atlantic coasts.
With the operation, the journey to Urabá is expected to gain a new standard of time and predictability for transport and supply.
Project Adds 39.5 Kilometers of New Road and Maintains Speed of Up to 80 Km/h
The work includes 39.5 kilometers of new road, designed for speeds of up to 80 km/h.
The design prioritizes fluidity and shortening routes in a region marked by mountains, rivers, and jungle areas, where the terrain creates historical bottlenecks.
The expected effect is a more efficient link between productive hubs and port areas, reflecting on commerce and regional circulation.
Reduction of 25 Km and Travel Times of One Hour and a Half Are Included in the Package of Changes
The route promises to reduce the distance between Santa Fe de Antioquia and Cañasgordas by 25 km.
The journey between Cañasgordas and Medellín is expected to take one hour and a half, while the trip between Santa Fe de Antioquia and Urabá is projected to take three hours and a half.
The average speed on the road also changes, with 80 km/h for light vehicles and 60 km/h for heavy ones, increasing the pace of transport in critical stretches.
Section 1 of Segment 2 Exceeds 64% and Is Expected to Be Delivered by September 2026
Section 1 of Segment 2 includes 7.1 kilometers of roadways, one bridge, and five tunnels, including one of 1 kilometer.
The progress has already surpassed 64%, with delivery expected by September 2026, within the schedule presented for this phase.
The goal is to free up a relevant set of local connections before the total completion of the corridor.
Section 2 Exceeds 60% and Two Bridges of 250 Meters Are Expected to Be Completed by December 2026

Section 2 adds 6.2 kilometers, twelve bridges, and six tunnels to the layout.
The execution has already exceeded 60%, with two bridges of 250 meters expected to be completed before December 2026.
Gizmodo provided the numbers and the cited deadlines.
Full Operation Is Expected for 2027 with Ventilation, Lighting, and Security Systems
The schedule indicates that the Toyo Tunnel will be fully operational in 2027, with a paved, lined, and equipped structure.
The package includes ventilation, lighting, environmental control, and security systems, essential items for a long and high-traffic tunnel.
The expectation is to consolidate a strategic corridor for agricultural and industrial cargo, strengthening regional competitiveness.
The project positions the Toyo Tunnel as a central piece of integration between regions separated by the terrain.
With the new connection, Colombian logistics is expected to gain more speed, predictability, and more direct access to the Caribbean ports, impacting movements and internal trade.
