The famous Itaipu hydroelectric plant managed to break a “record”, so to speak, registering a high productivity rate throughout 2020

The Itaipu hydroelectric plant, which is located on the border of Brazil and Paraguay, has the title of largest generator of renewable and clean energy on the entire planet, is facing the greatest drought of all time, in the year 2020 the hydroelectric plant of Itaipu broke a new record, of highest annual productivity in the range of 36 years and seven months that is in operation.

The Itaipu hydroelectric power plant has an affluence 30% lower than the historical average, it optimized energy production to the maximum, thus taking advantage of all the water it received, without wasting anything, the productivity of the hydroelectric power plant was exactly 1,087 MWmed/m³/s.

This indicator establishes the relationship between the amount of energy generated by the hydroelectric power plant with turbine flow.

Itaipu hydroelectric plant sets record for highest accumulated generation

In addition to the high productivity of the hydroelectric plant, Itaipu breaks an important record, of the highest cumulative generation among all the plants in the world. Since the beginning of operations at the Itaipu hydroelectric plant, in May 1984, more than 2,75 billion MWh have been produced, thus confirming its world leadership in the production of clean and renewable energy over other plants. As far as is known, no other plant produced as much electricity as the Brazilian-Paraguayan one.

In a year punished by drought, with an average inflow approaching almost 8 m³/s, the worst in history from 1983 to the present day, the Itaipu hydroelectric plant generated in 2020 alone, a total of more than 75 million MWh.

“In 2020, more than ever, the technical area gave a precise response when facing an atypical year both from the point of view of efficiency and covid-19”, praises the Brazilian general director, general Joaquim Silva e Luna.

“Our teams showed exemplary commitment and excellence in the delivery of their work. Itaipu, on several occasions, was called upon to serve the electrical systems in Brazil and Paraguay, with additional energy and power availability, meeting all the challenges to the letter.”
