With Projection to Insert the Azulão-Jaguatirica Thermal Complex in Energy Auctions, Eneva Aims to Add One Gigawatt of Thermal Energy Generation in the State of Amazonas
Eneva S.A, a Brazilian energy company that operates in the sectors of generation, exploration, and production of oil and natural gas as well as electricity trading, has not abandoned the intention of establishing a 600-megawatt thermal power plant in Manaus, in the state of Amazonas, even though negotiations with Petrobras regarding the Urucu Polo have not developed well. However, due to other priorities, the project’s pace had to be slowed down, according to information from the Director of New Business Marcelo Lopes, provided during the Eneva Investor Day event.

The Director of New Business at Eneva also stated that even the acquisition of the Urucu Polo (Amazonas) may be put into question in the future if Petrobras decides to restart the negotiation process for a more appropriate price. According to Lopes’ statement at the virtual event, the Urucu Polo remains a potential purchase for the company due to a shift in priorities.
According to the original article from the Broadcast portal about the thermal power plant in Amazonas, which you can check by clicking here, Eneva itself stated that negotiations with Brazil’s state oil company did not work out due to the excessive increase in the price of oil per barrel and the increase in the reserves themselves.

Thermal Power Plant in Rio Grande do Sul Is Key to Attracting GWM
According to Marcelo Lopes, in Amazonas and throughout the Northern region, what Eneva has prioritized is the monetization of the Azulão-Jaguatirica proposal, which replicates the Reservoir-to-Wire (R2W) system that the company already uses, featuring thermal plants located near gas production, and Juruá, which, in turn, is located in the Solimões Basin, also in Amazonas, where it purchased seven blocks in 2020.
“I believe in the potential of the Northern region and in our basis that the thermal generation market, that is, the demand for thermal generation from the interconnected system, will be one of the main destinations for gas in the region”, commented Lopes. “We already monetized Azulão 1 in the first capacity auction that took place last year; we really liked this auction model because it provides a very interesting reservoir management capability”, he emphasized.
Additionally, according to Lopes’ statement, the estimate is that the Azulão-Jaguatirica thermal complex will be one of the participants in energy auctions in 2022 and next year, 2023. Eneva’s intention is to add one gigawatt of thermal energy generation right “in the heart of the Amazon,” meaning in a well-located area in the state of Amazonas, alongside Azulão.
In due course, Eneva’s Operations Director Lino Cançado highlights: “The hydropower park in Northern Brazil is run-of-river; it will always need thermal power plants, in addition to the intermittency of renewables. Even if in Boa Vista it is interconnected to the SIN, there will still be issues to balance (energy supply) at the edge.”
Eneva Starts Commercial Production of the Azulão Field in the Amazonas Basin
Today, Monday (09/27), Eneva started commercial production of the Azulão field, located in the Amazonas Basin. It is the first project to go into operation in the region, after 20 years since its discovery. According to the epbr website, the natural gas produced by Eneva in the Azulão field, located in the Amazonas Basin, will be used in energy generation by the Jaguatirica II thermal power plant (UTE).
