Petrobras Submitted to Aneel the Process for Deactivation of the Camaçari Thermal Power Plant in Bahia
The Camaçari Thermal Power Plant (Bahia), known as Termocamaçari, is in the process of deactivation by Petrobras. The state-owned company initiated the process with Aneel, the National Electric Energy Agency, claiming that the thermal power plant would be unfeasible and also informing that the plant is no longer part of the natural gas and energy generation sectors’ plans of Petrobras.
Petrobras Strategy
The deactivation of the plant is a strategy of Petrobras in the area of natural gas and energy, focusing on the competitive operation of its own natural gas commercialization and the optimization of the portfolio of thermal products for self-consumption. According to this strategic direction, the state-owned company has initiated the procedure to revoke the grant for the Termocamaçari Plant.
In 2017, the gas-fired plant was completely surrounded by problems, leading to its unfeasibility. Last year, Petrobras registered Termocamaçari and several other thermal energy assets in a government-planned auction to sign a 15-year contract for natural gas production, including new or refurbished projects.

Petrobras Thermal Power Plant in Bahia
Built in 2001, using over US$ 60 million, the plant – which has the capacity to generate about 120 megawatts (MW) of energy – was the result of a major partnership between Petrobras and the Portuguese EDP.
About three years later, the Brazilian state-owned company decided that it would have full control of the plant, paying more than R$ 240 million, inflation-adjusted, owning to date 100% of the business.
Termocamaçari has an installed capacity of 138 MW. In 2013, it generated an average of 4,043 megawatts (MW) of electric energy for the National Interconnected System (SIN). In 2014, the generation was 4,761 megawatts (MW) on average, through the 21 owned and leased thermal power plants that make up the generating park.
