The Sol do Cerrado Project Is One of the Largest Solar Energy Production Enterprises in All of Latin America. Vale’s Billion-Dollar Investments Will Soon Bear Fruit, Following the Start of Resource Production at the Solar Park.

Vale continues to expand its presence in the national renewable energy market and aims to become a leader in the segment. For this Friday, (11/18), the company has officially commenced production of the Sol do Cerrado Project, a solar park located in the municipality of Jaíba, northern Minas Gerais. The solar energy produced at the site will have the capacity to meet the needs of a city of 800,000 inhabitants in the coming years.

Sol do Cerrado Solar Park Is One of the Largest Solar Energy Production Enterprises in All of Latin America, Confirms Vale

After dominating the national mining sector and becoming the largest company in Brazilian territory, Vale seeks to achieve the same position with solar energy production.

The mining company announced the start of energy generation at the Sol do Cerrado solar park project, installed in the Minas Gerais region.

The enterprise is one of the largest solar energy parks in Latin America, with an installed capacity of 766 Megawatts-peak, equivalent to the consumption of a city of 800,000 inhabitants.

By the end of July 2023, when it is already operating at full capacity, the solar park will ensure that 16% of all energy consumed by the company in its operations is produced.

Located in an area equivalent to more than 1,300 soccer fields, the solar energy production complex received an investment of R$ 3 billion and has become one of the largest enterprises in all of Latin America.

The Sol do Cerrado Project currently consists of 17 sub-parks, four of which have already been energized, and Vale aims to make these numbers even larger in the coming years.

When operating at full capacity, the plant will feature 1.4 million solar panels with an automatic tracking system that follows the sun’s movement during the day, thereby ensuring even greater utilization of sunlight.

The company did not skimp on investments and secured a total of 10.2 million meters of cables to ensure that the solar energy production and transmission system operated as efficiently as possible.

The Sol do Cerrado Project Will Contribute to Vale’s Initiative to Achieve Net Zero Carbon Consumption by the Year 2050

Vale has been increasingly investing in sustainability projects and minimizing the environmental impacts caused by its operations.

In this way, the company announced a few years ago the initiative to achieve net zero carbon consumption and emissions in its operations by the end of the year 2050.

To achieve this, it has been undertaking the construction of large renewable energy projects, such as the Sol do Cerrado Project, which will contribute to the company’s sustainability initiative.

The energy generated by Sol do Cerrado will reduce Vale’s emissions by 134 thousand tCO2e/year, which represents the emissions of approximately 100 thousand compact cars.

“Sol do Cerrado is a groundbreaking project for Vale, bringing local development, renewable energy, and aligning with our goal of being leaders in sustainable mining,” says Eduardo Bartolomeo, Vale’s CEO.

In conclusion, the solar park project has secured a total of 3,000 jobs over the years of development, contributing to the Minas Gerais region.
