“Construction of the Structure Is Part of a Set of Actions to Ensure Water Supply for the Local Population”, Says Vale in Official Statement on September 30
Vale begins, this week, the works on the new water intake from the Pará River, located between Pará de Minas and Conceição do Pará, in the Central-West region of the State. The structure is part of a set of actions aimed at ensuring water supply for the local population, safely and following all engineering quality standards. Upon completion of the work, scheduled for July 2020, the water intake will be handed over to the Prefeitura de Pará de Minas and operated by the Águas de Pará de Minas Concessionaire (Capam).
The flow to be captured by the water intake will be 284 l/s (a little over 1 million liters every hour), the same flow that the municipality of Pará de Minas captured from the Paraopeba River. The pipeline will be approximately 47 km long and will consist of about 7,200 pipes ranging from 6 to 12 meters in length and 500 mm in diameter. With the exception of river and creek crossings, the pipeline will be entirely underground to minimize future impacts from the construction.
Job Creation and Local Income
The expectation is that between 500 and 600 jobs will be generated at the peak of the construction, which is scheduled for the period from November 2019 to March 2020, with priority given to local labor and neighboring towns. Similarly, Vale will continue its internal policy of prioritizing the hiring of local suppliers, generating jobs and income for residents of Pará de Minas, Conceição do Pará, and neighboring municipalities. The water intake is part of the measures outlined in the Commitment Term (TC) signed on March 18 by Vale and the Prefeitura de Pará de Minas, Capam, and the oversight of the Public Prosecutor’s Office of Minas Gerais (MPMG). In addition to this, the TC included emergency actions already implemented by Vale to mitigate the impact of the stoppage of water capture from the Paraopeba River in Pará de Minas.
Among these measures, the company has put into operation eight deep wells guaranteeing a flow of 52 l/s. A new water capture facility was also built on the Cova Danta stream, with a capacity of 96 l/s. For this system, an electricity distribution line was also installed.
All actions outlined in the TC have been properly communicated and authorized by the competent authorities. After the completion of the new water intake in Pará de Minas and, in the future, with the resumption of water capture from the Paraopeba River, the municipality of Pará de Minas may have its water supply capacity doubled compared to what it was before the rupture of the B1 dam in Brumadinho.
It is important to emphasize that these measures have ensured the supply for the local population so far and Vale continues to work in conjunction with the Municipal Prefecture, Capam, and the Public Prosecutor’s Office.
