Vale will invest BRL 190 million

As a form of compensation to the evacuated communities in Barão de Cocais, Macacos and Itabirito, Vale has undertaken a series of actions and programs.

This Tuesday, September 24th, Vale announced that it is investing BRL 190 million in the actions of the Impacted Territories Development Plan. The contribution will be made in the district of São Sebastião das Águas Claras, better known as Macacos (district of Nova Lima), in Barão de Cocais and in Itabirito. Vale president and directors are indicted for homicide in Brumadinho CPI.

With a total investment of BRL 190 million, the Impacted Territories Development Plan has been prepared according to the economic and social profile of each of these locations and aims to develop the economic vocations of the regions, in addition to promoting the well-being after the changes in the emergency levels of the B3/B4, Sul Superior and Forquilhas dams.

Investments will be directed to the areas of tourism, infrastructure, education, health, environment and professional training. Among the actions to be carried out are the construction and renovation of public equipment, cleaning and desilting of watercourses, construction of schools and strengthening of social and health programs.

Planning was built based on the demands, needs and vocation of each of the impacted locations. The set of initiatives is being defined based on permanent dialogue with the communities involved and municipal public authorities.

In these communities, Vale provides all the necessary assistance to families: 333 family groups are living in houses rented by the company, hotels and regional inns or in the homes of friends and relatives, according to the choice of those affected.

In addition, Vale made available psychologists, social workers and doctors available to these communities. This assistance aims to guarantee, for example, access to medication and special food for those in need.

A direct channel for meeting the demands of communities: 0800 031 0831 has been implemented since January 25th.

With the aim of protecting communities and reducing the impact on the environment, Vale is carrying out three containment works in locations located downstream of the Sul Superior, B3/B4 and Forquilhas dams.

The works should be completed by the beginning of 2020 and are included in the project to de-characterize nine dams, worth BRL 7,1 billion, announced in Vale's first quarter balance sheet, in May.

The containment structures will have the capacity to retain the tailings from the dams in the event of an extreme failure scenario. To carry out the three works, Vale is building access roads to the construction sites.

The containment works are decommissionable, that is, after the completion of the dam de-characterization plan, they can be eliminated. And the areas that suffered vegetation suppression will be recovered.
