Vale Pará de Minas pipeline works jobs

“The construction of the structure is part of a set of actions to guarantee supply to the local population”, says Vale in an official statement on September 30

This week, Vale starts work on the new pipeline for the Pará river, located between Pará de Minas and Conceição do Pará, in the Midwest region of the state. The structure is part of a set of actions aimed at ensuring the safe supply of water to the local population, following all engineering quality standards. Upon completion of the work, scheduled for July 2020, the pipeline will be handed over to the Municipality of Pará de Minas and operated by Concessionária Águas de Pará de Minas (Capam).

The flow to be captured by the pipeline will be 284 l/s (a little more than 1 million liters every hour), the same flow that the municipality of Pará de Minas captured in the Paraopeba river. The pipeline will be approximately 47 km long and will consist of approximately 7,2 tubes measuring between 6 meters and 12 meters in length and with a diameter of 500 mm. With the exception of crossing rivers and streams, the pipeline will be completely underground to minimize post-work impacts.

Local employment and income generation

The expectation is that 500 to 600 jobs will be generated at the peak of the works, scheduled for the period from November 2019 to March 2020, with priority given to local labor and labor from neighboring cities. Likewise, Vale will follow its internal policy of favoring the contracting of suppliers from the region, generating jobs and income for residents of Pará de Minas, Conceição do Pará and neighboring municipalities. The pipeline is part of the measures provided for in the Term of Commitment (TC) signed on March 18 by Vale and the Municipality of Pará de Minas, Capam and the intervention of the Public Ministry of Minas Gerais (MPMG). In addition to it, the TC provided for emergency actions already implemented by Vale to mitigate the impact of the interruption in capturing the Paraopeba River in Pará de Minas.

Among these measures, the company put into operation eight deep wells guaranteeing a flow of 52 l/s. A new intake was also built on the Cova Danta stream, with a capacity of 96 l/s. For this system, an electrical power distribution line was also installed.

All actions provided for in the TC were duly communicated and authorized by the competent bodies. After the conclusion of the work on the new pipeline in Pará de Minas and, in the future, with the return of abstraction on the Paraopeba river, the municipality of Pará de Minas may have its water supply capacity doubled in relation to what it was before the dam rupture B1, in Brumadinho.

It is important to point out that these measures have ensured the supply of the local population so far and Vale continues to work together with the City Hall, Capam and the Public Prosecutor's Office.
