As Compensation to Evacuated Communities in Barão de Cocais, Macacos, and Itabirito, Vale Undertook a Series of Actions and Programs.
This Tuesday, September 24, Vale announced that it is investing R$ 190 million in the actions of the Impacted Territories Development Plan. The funding will be directed towards the district of São Sebastião das Águas Claras, better known as Macacos (district of Nova Lima), in Barão de Cocais and Itabirito. With a total investment of R$ 190 million, the Impacted Territories Development Plan has been developed according to the economic and social profile of each of these localities and aims to develop the economic vocations of the regions, as well as promote social well-being following changes in the emergency levels of the B3/B4, Sul Superior, and Forquilhas dams.

The investments will be directed towards the areas of tourism, infrastructure, education, health, environment, and professional training. Among the actions to be executed are the construction and renovation of public facilities, cleaning and dredging of watercourses, construction of schools, and strengthening of social and health programs.
The planning was developed based on the demands, needs, and vocations of each impacted locality. The set of initiatives is being defined through ongoing dialogue with the involved communities and municipal public authorities.
In these communities, Vale provides all necessary assistance to families: 333 family units are residing in houses rented by the company, regional hotels and inns, or in the homes of friends and relatives, according to the options of those affected.
In addition, Vale has made psychologists, social workers, and doctors available to these communities. This assistance aims to ensure, for example, access to medications and special food for those in need.
A direct channel for addressing community demands: 0800 031 0831 has been implemented since January 25.
In order to protect the communities and reduce the impact on the environment, Vale is executing three containment works in locations situated downstream from the Sul Superior, B3/B4, and Forquilhas dams.
The works are expected to be completed by early 2020 and are included in the project to decommission nine dams, valued at R$ 7.1 billion, announced in Vale’s first-quarter report in May.
The containment structures will have the capacity to retain the tailings from the dams in the event of an extreme failure scenario. To carry out the three works, Vale is constructing access points at the sites for the construction of the building sites.
The containment works are decommissionable, meaning that after the completion of the dam decommissioning plan, they can be eliminated. And the areas that suffered vegetation suppression will be restored.
