Volkswagen Brand Returns With Electric Models That Directly Target Jeep. The Promise Is a Turnaround in Off-Road SUVs!

Off-road and SUV enthusiasts can start holding their breath: a legendary brand, recalling the pioneering spirit of the 60s, is about to return to the roads.

The Volkswagen surprised by announcing the rebirth of Scout Motors, a historic name that, this time, comes with a bold goal — to compete directly with Jeep and offer electric SUVs and pickups that revive the classic look and ruggedness, but with future technology.

The question remains: what is so special about this return that promises to shake up the sports utility vehicle market?

At the heart of this revival are two new 100% electric models: the SUV Traveler and the pickup Terra, both designed with impressive range and construction features that combine rustic spirit with modern design.

Scout Motors is reborn inspired by the International Scout, a brand that made history as a rival to the Jeep Willys in the past.

Now, Volkswagen is seeking an audience that values the combination of tradition and innovation, directly targeting the expansion of the electric SUV and pickup market with a retro touch.

The History and Inspiration of the International Scout

The origin of the Scout dates back to the 1950s when International Harvester Company — known for its production of tractors and trucks — decided to launch its first utility vehicle, the Travelall, inspired by robust pickups.

Shortly thereafter, the brand introduced the Scout, a direct competitor to the Jeep Willys, which combined durability and performance in any terrain.

This reputation for reliability and laid-back style attracted fans for decades, making the Scout an icon among off-road vehicles.

Now, with Scout Motors under the command of Volkswagen, the new lineup seeks to evoke the essence of these pioneers, but with a new approach: electrification.

Scout Motors and Its Announced Models: Traveler and Terra

Traveler: The Root SUV, Now Electric

The SUV Traveler has been designed based on the robust style of the 1960s, but adapted for the world of electric cars.

Built with a body-on-frame — a feature that gives it the feel of a “real SUV” — the Traveler promises an electric range of approximately 500 km, without the need for fossil fuels.

However, for those looking for even greater range, the model will have the option of a range extender, which is a gasoline engine that complements the electric performance.

Terra: The Pickup for All Terrain

The Terra, a pickup that uses the same body and frame configuration as the Traveler, also delivers around 500 km of range solely with its electric battery.

With the range extender, the pickup can reach up to 800 km, providing significant reach for those who need a vehicle for long trips or remote areas.

Although details of the gasoline engine for the range extender have not been disclosed, the system is similar to what Honda uses in its hybrids, functioning only to recharge the batteries without traction on the wheels.

Cutting-Edge Technology: 800 V Architecture and Bidirectional Charging

Volkswagen revealed that the 800 V electric architecture will be one of the main differentiators of these models, ensuring faster and more efficient charging.

With a capacity of up to 350 kW for recharging, the vehicles can be charged in less time and also have bidirectional charging capability, allowing the vehicle to act as a power source for other devices in emergency situations or for outdoor activities.

Launch Date and Estimated Prices of Scout Motors Models

It will still take some time for these models to hit the streets: the official launch is scheduled for 2027, with Scout Motors operating as an independent brand under the Volkswagen umbrella.

Anyone wishing to secure one of these historic machines can reserve one of the models for US$ 100, a price that could make it easier for more fans to join the new phase of Scout.

The price of the Traveler is estimated at US$ 50,000, or about R$ 285,000 at the current exchange rate, while the Terra will cost around US$ 51,500 (around R$ 294,000).

These values reinforce Scout’s competitiveness in the luxury utility market, with prices that position the new models as direct rivals to Jeep, without sacrificing technology and innovation.

The Future of Electric SUVs and Pickups

The re-launch of Scout Motors marks a new chapter for Volkswagen, which seeks to consolidate its presence in the electric vehicle segment.

The decision to include a combustion engine as a range extender is strategic, as it provides an advantage for the audience wishing for an electric car but with extended range.

This revival suggests that the market for SUVs and pickups is not only expanding but also reinventing itself to meet sustainability demands without compromising power and classic style.

And Now?

With the promise to compete directly with icons like Jeep, Scout Motors represents more than a nostalgic return — it is a bet on the future of electric vehicles and the possibilities of electrification in varied terrains.

But will this fusion of classic style and Volkswagen’s modern technology really win the hearts of SUV fans?

What is your opinion? Will Scout Motors be able to surpass Jeep and lead the new era of electric SUVs and pickups?
