Volkswagen revealed in China the first specifications of the ID. Era 9X, a large SUV that introduces the EREV technology to the brand, an acronym used for “Electric with Range Extender.”

The model appeared in public records from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, a regulatory step that usually anticipates technical data of cars about to hit the local market.

Even being presented as an electrified vehicle, the ID. Era 9X carries a 1.5 turbo combustion engine from the TSI family, but with a different function than that of a traditional hybrid.

In this system, the propulsion is always done by electric motors, while the gasoline engine acts solely as a generator to recharge the battery, without any direct mechanical connection to the wheels.

EREV Technology Extends Range Without Compromising Electric Drive

The aim of the EREV system is to combine electric driving with the possibility of refueling at gas stations, reducing dependence on charging infrastructure in everyday use.

In practice, the SUV behaves like a pure electric vehicle, but keeps the battery charged by the generator motor when necessary, extending the range on long trips.

Volkswagen reveals ID. Era 9X, giant hybrid EREV SUV with 1.5 TSI engine, 510 hp, all-wheel drive and range above 1,000 km in China.

According to regulatory data, the 1.5 TSI engine used as a range extender delivers a maximum power of 105 kW, dedicated exclusively to generating electrical energy.

This energy is directed to the vehicle’s electrical system, responsible for powering the battery and the drive motors.

Dimensions of the ID. Era 9X Place the SUV Among the Largest in the Category

The size is one of the central points of the project.

The records indicate 5,207 mm in length, 1,997 mm in width, and 1,810 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,070 mm.

These dimensions position the model above global SUVs from the brand and reinforce its classification in the luxury segment.

The homologated configuration provides for six seats, reinforcing the focus on families and premium use.

The design follows the visual identity of the ID. line, but takes on straighter and bulkier lines, aligned with the Chinese public’s preference for imposing SUVs.

Homologation images also show a module on the roof associated with advanced driver assistance sensors.

Power of Up to 510 Hp and All-Wheel Drive in the Most Complete Versions

The electric setup varies according to the version.

There is a configuration with a rear motor of 220 kW, in addition to an option with two motors, which adds a front propeller of 160 kW.

In the all-wheel-drive version, the combined power reaches 380 kW, equivalent to 510 hp.

The records indicate a maximum speed of 200 km/h.

The curb weight varies between 2,600 and 2,700 kg, reflecting the size and capacity of the vehicle.

Battery, Electric Range and Combined Reach

Information about batteries still varies according to the documented version.

What appears more consistently is the mention of a package of up to 65.2 kWh, with an electric range that can exceed 400 km in the Chinese CLTC cycle, depending on the configuration.

Part of the specialized coverage also cites the existence of different battery capacities and chemistries.

As it is an EREV, the total range increases significantly with the use of the generator motor and the fuel tank.

Reports from the specialized press associate the project with combined range exceeding 1,000 km in homologated cycles.

This number helps contextualize the comparison with long-distance trips, such as the road route between São Paulo and Brasília.

Volkswagen’s Strategy Targets Chinese Competition

The ID. Era 9X was developed within the SAIC-Volkswagen joint venture and reflects a clear adaptation to the Chinese market.
