After receiving their recognition, they traveled to London to participate in the celebrations for Guinness World Records Day. However, the couple’s journey had begun a decade earlier when a message sent via the old social network Orkut brought them together.
From Orkut to Long-Distance Dating
Paulo found Katyucia on Orkut in 2006 and decided to send her a message after developing an interest in her. The first attempt did not progress: Katyucia did not reciprocate his interest at that time and even blocked him on the social network.
About a year and a half later, she decided to unblock Paulo. The conversation resumed and led to a virtual friendship that lasted for approximately two years before their first in-person meeting.
They met in person on December 20, 2008, and began dating nine days later. However, their relationship still needed to overcome the distance between Londrina, Paraná, where Katyucia lived, and Itapeva, São Paulo, where Paulo resided.
The long-distance relationship lasted four years, during which they could only meet every two or three months. This phase ended in January 2012, when Katyucia moved from Londrina to Itapeva.
In a 2021 interview published by Guinness World Records, Katyucia summarized their coming together: “It wasn’t love at first sight; it was a conquest.” The publication also recalled their online connection and the years leading up to their marriage.
With the move, Paulo and Katyucia began sharing their daily routines. After four years of living together and nearly eight years of dating, they decided to marry in 2016.
Their union occurred before the verification that allowed recognition in the married couples category. Their official measurements reached 181.41 centimeters when combined.
Record and Mobility Challenges
The measurement of height took place in Itapeva, not in London. The trip to the British capital happened later, when Paulo and Katyucia participated in the Guinness World Records Day activities and visited the organization’s headquarters.
Their short stature also impacts practical situations in the couple’s life, especially regarding mobility and the attention they receive in public spaces. In reports released by Guinness, the two stated that being together helps them face the stares and uncomfortable situations related to their physical differences.
For Paulo, the challenges of mobility began in childhood. He was unable to walk until he was 21 and, during his teenage years, used a small three-wheeled vehicle for transportation; at 20, he started using a four-wheeled vehicle.
In 2008, Paulo began using orthopedic boots as an alternative for walking. The adaptation took a few months and allowed him to reduce his reliance on the vehicles he had previously used for part of his transport.
Later on, Paulo obtained his driver’s license and started driving an adapted car. At his job as a municipal public servant in Itapeva, he earned the nickname “Gigantic Paul” from his colleagues.
Katyucia also established her own professional routine. In an interview published by Guinness in 2021, the organization noted that she was working independently and engaging in activities related to social media, while Paulo continued working in municipal public service.
The exposure from the record led the couple to participate in travel and public appearances, including outside Brazil. They also reported being recognized more frequently after their story gained international attention.
During the celebrations held in 2016, Katyucia associated the visibility of the title with advocating for a more equitable treatment for people with physical differences. This message has accompanied much of their public appearances following their global recognition.
In addition to the record, the journey documented by Guinness includes concrete changes in the couple’s daily lives, such as Katyucia’s move to Itapeva, Paulo’s adaptation to walk and drive, and the building of a shared routine after years of sporadic meetings.
