With 182 kilometers in length, the Overseas Highway connects the American mainland to the Florida Keys, crossing 44 islands linked by bridges over the sea

Located in southern Florida, in the United States, the Overseas Highway impresses any visitor. The scenery looks like something out of a movie, given the natural beauty surrounding it. With 182 kilometers in length, the highway connects the American mainland to the Florida Keys.

The route involves 44 islands, linked by bridges that seem to float over the typical turquoise waters of the Caribbean.

Moreover, the road is considered one of the great works of modern engineering. It goes far beyond a simple transportation route, assuming a tourist and cultural role.

The Hellotickets platform included the route among the “most scenic drives in the United States,” alongside legendary routes like Route 66 and the Pacific Coast Highway.

Details of the Route

One of the most emblematic stretches is the Seven Mile Bridge. Built in the early 20th century, it was once considered one of the largest bridges in the world.

The visitor has access to a panoramic view of 360 degrees of the ocean, making it one of the best-known postcards of Florida.

The old version of the bridge has not been forgotten. Today, it is used only by pedestrians and cyclists, creating a unique experience of direct contact with nature.

Along the way, towns like Islamorada, Key Largo, and Marathon offer varied leisure activities, such as boating, diving, and sport fishing.

In Big Pine Key, it is possible to spot endangered deer. Additionally, the location provides access to beautiful beaches, such as those of Bahia Honda State Park, which are highly sought after by tourists.

The route ends in Key West, a city that blends Caribbean culture, historic architecture, and houses the former home of writer Ernest Hemingway.

History and Attractions

The history of the road is also part of its charm. The Overseas Highway was born from the Overseas Railroad, destroyed by a hurricane in 1935.

The U.S. government took advantage of some of the old structures to build the highway within the New Deal projects. Therefore, the route is not only tourist-oriented but also a historical engineering landmark.

The title of “All-American Road” reinforces its importance. Today, the Overseas Highway has ceased to be just a passage for vehicles and has transformed into a major tourist attraction in the United States.

Along the way, there are ecological trails, seaside bars, and even craft villages that attract visitors seeking different experiences.

In Brazil, the most beautiful road is on the coast of São Paulo, built by the Brazilian Army in the last century.

But in the United States, the 182 kilometers of the Overseas Highway continue to enchant by uniting nature, history, and tourism in a single trip.
