Germany Has Fully Joined The Global Race For Lithium After Confirmation Of A Discovery Of A Huge Lithium Deposit. According To Neptune Energy, 43 Million Tons Of Lithium Carbonate Equivalent Have Been Identified, Putting The Country Among The Largest Holders Of This Strategic Resource. This Mineral Wealth Could Redefine The European Energy Matrix And Decisively Boost The Production Of Electric Vehicles.

Germany has just gained prominence in the global energy transition landscape with the confirmation of one of the largest lithium deposits in the world.

According to Neptune Energy, the region of Altmark, in northern Saxony-Anhalt, holds 43 million tons of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE), in an area already marked by 55 years of natural gas exploration.

The revelation reinforces Europe’s potential in the race for critical resources for battery and electric vehicle production.

Assessment Confirms Unprecedented Mineral Wealth

The discovery was validated after Neptune Energy, a UK-based oil and gas company, hired the independent agency Sproule ERCE.

The assessment followed the international standard CIM/NI43-101, ensuring technical credibility to the survey.

Neptune Energy’s CEO, Andreas Scheck, stated that the results highlight the importance of Saxony-Anhalt for lithium supply. “This allows us to significantly contribute to the German and European lithium supply market,” he emphasized.

The company highlighted that, with 43 million tons, Altmark ranks among the largest lithium deposits based on projects in the world.

For comparison, the Lithium Triangle, which includes Argentina, Bolivia, and Chile, holds about 50 million tons, equivalent to 53% of global resources.

Region With Energy Tradition

The Altmark basin, part of the Permian formation that extends to Russia, Ukraine, and Poland, has previously been one of the largest natural gas fields in Europe. Since 1969, Neptune Energy and its predecessors have been exploring local geological resources.

Recent studies confirmed that the Rotliegend brines, associated with the gas field, show strong mineralization and high lithium content. This geological characteristic was decisive in positioning Altmark as a new hub for the energy transition.

Shift In Focus: From Gas To Lithium

With the advancement of electric mobility, Neptune Energy has decided to reorient its strategy. The company has prioritized the supply of battery materials over fossil fuels.

The method chosen to explore the resource also reflects this shift. Instead of open-pit mining or evaporation ponds, which cause significant environmental impacts, the company will adopt direct lithium extraction (DLE) technology. This process uses underground brine, reducing damage to the environment.

Licenses And Project Expansion

Currently, Neptune Energy holds the Jeetze-L production license, as well as three exploration licenses in Altmark.

In 2024, the company received the Milde AL and Milde CL authorizations, and in 2025, it also secured Milde BL, expanding its operations to the southeastern part of the region.

The company’s new energy director, Axel Wenke, emphasized that the transition in Altmark is based on unique conditions. “The region combines geological potential, established infrastructure, and technical knowledge – perfect conditions to successfully complete the transformation from natural gas production to environmentally friendly lithium extraction,” he stated in a statement.

Prospects For The Future

The announcement from Neptune Energy places Germany on the map of major lithium powers, a resource fundamental for electric vehicles, energy storage, and electronic devices.

Together with the Lithium Triangle in South America, Altmark is now recognized as one of the world’s most promising deposits, reinforcing the strategic role of the European country in the transition to a low-carbon economy.

With the discovery, the region that for decades supplied natural gas can now reshape its energy legacy and assume a central role in supplying one of the most contested raw materials of the 21st century.
