The Colossus Project in Southern Minas Advances with Letters of Support and Eligibility in Export Credit Agencies, Placing Rare Earths in Minas Gerais at the Center of the Geopolitical Chessboard.

The rare earths in Minas Gerais have firmly entered the international radar after the Australian miner Viridis Mining & Minerals announced that the Colossus Project received a letter of support for financing from Export Finance Australia, the Australian government’s export credit agency. According to the statement, the support could pave the way for up to US$ 50 million directed towards the development of the project.

This movement does not happen in a vacuum. Australia, Canada, and France have been classifying the project as strategic within the Western effort to diversify suppliers and reduce dependence on China in the global supply chain of these minerals. In practice, the dispute has shifted from mining alone to economic and industrial security.

What Was Announced and Why This Changes the Game

The letter of support reported by Viridis places Colossus in a due diligence phase. This means undergoing technical, financial, environmental, and credit analyses conducted by the Australian agency before eventual formal approval of the financing.

The announcement also had an immediate impact on the market. The company’s shares rose more than 12% on the Australian stock exchange following the release, signaling that investors viewed the advance as an increase in viability and a reduction in perceived risk.

Why Rare Earths in Minas Gerais Attract So Much Attention

The Colossus Project hosts reserves of ion-adsorption clays rich in neodymium, praseodymium, terbium, and dysprosium. These elements are essential for permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, defense systems, and high-tech equipment.

This type of application explains the strategic weight of the topic. When a raw material is linked to energy, mobility, and defense, it ceases to be a common commodity and becomes a geopolitical asset.

Thus, the rare earths in Minas Gerais have begun to be treated as a piece of industrial sovereignty for countries seeking to reduce vulnerabilities.

The International Support Triad: Australia, Canada, and France

Before the Australian move, Colossus had already been deemed eligible for financing by two other international export credit agencies: Bpifrance Assurance Export, linked to the French government, and Export Development Canada, from the Canadian government.

This eligibility is relevant because it indicates that the project meets the technical, environmental, economic, and strategic criteria required by these countries for guarantees or public credit.

This tends to increase the confidence of banks and private investors, as part of the risk can be mitigated by official instruments.

In the French case, Colossus was included in the Garantie de Prêt Stratégique program, which provides partial sovereign guarantees for bank financing of initiatives considered to be of national and geopolitical interest to France and its partners.

Where is Colossus Located and What Stage is the Project in

The rare earths in Minas Gerais in focus are located in the southern part of the state, in the Poços de Caldas region. In December, the project received a preliminary environmental license, a crucial step in the licensing process.

Viridis expects to reach the final investment decision in the second half of 2026. The declared strategy is to establish itself as a supplier of these raw materials for Western countries, especially the United States, in a context of reorganization of global supply chains and strengthening mineral security.

The China Factor: Dependence, Global Supply Chain, and Pressure for Alternatives

The backdrop is the concentration of the global rare earth supply chain under Chinese control, which has been highlighted as a risk by Western countries. The response has been to support projects outside of China, accelerate financing instruments, and create alternative industrial routes to ensure supply.

In this context, rare earths in Minas Gerais cease to be merely a regional asset and integrate into an international supply architecture.

The project becomes a “knot” in a larger network, where financing, licenses, processing capacity, and future purchase contracts are all pieces of the same puzzle.

Research Center in Poços de Caldas and the Strategy Without Chinese Technology

Recently, the miner announced the construction of a research and processing center for rare earths in Poços de Caldas, with an explicit directive: no use of Chinese technology, components, or equipment.

The resources associated with France, Canada, and Australia are expected to be used during the construction phase of the project and also to cover bureaucratic stages linked to the research and environmental licensing phases.

The center will be located in the industrial park of Poços de Caldas, about 7 kilometers from the company’s mineral concessions, and will serve as a base for experimental production of mixed rare earth carbonate.

The start of operations is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026. The plant, with a capacity to process 100 kilograms per hour of raw ore, will function as a demonstration unit aimed at validating technical parameters, operational optimization, and commercial preparation of the development.

What This Demonstration Phase Solves in Practice

Projects for rare earths in Minas Gerais do not depend solely on “having ore.” They need to demonstrate the capacity to transform ore into a product with consistent standards, traceability, and technical performance for the industry that will use the material.

Therefore, one goal of the center is to generate samples for qualifying offtake partners, companies that will be able to sign early purchase contracts for future production. It is the bridge between promising and selling, reducing commercial uncertainty and helping to unlock investment.

What to Observe from Here On

Rare Earths in Minas Gerais in the Colossus Project in Poços de Caldas Advances with Export Finance Australia.

The sequence of milestones that is likely to define the pace of Colossus is clear:

The evolution of due diligence at Export Finance Australia
The advancement of licensing stages after the preliminary license
The construction and commissioning of the research and processing center in Poços de Caldas
The qualification of the product and negotiation with offtake partners
The final investment decision in the second half of 2026

Each of these points could accelerate or halt the path. Nonetheless, the international movement indicates that, for the West, rare earths in Minas Gerais are not a secondary issue. They are a direct component of industrial and geopolitical strategy.

Do you think this rare earths project in Minas Gerais will become a new strategic hub for Brazil, or will global dependence on China continue to dominate the game for many years?
