The ketogenic diet, known for its high fat consumption and drastic reduction of carbohydrates, has gained popularity in recent years as a quick solution for weight loss. However, a new scientific study conducted by researchers at the University of Utah has raised an important alert about the possible side effects of this dietary approach. Although the results are still based on experiments with rats, the findings raise relevant questions about the long-term metabolic impact of the ketogenic diet.

The information was released by the website ScienceAlert, based on a scientific article published in the journal Science Advances, presenting technical data that goes beyond simple weight loss analysis and delves into discussions about metabolic health, liver function, and blood sugar regulation.

How The Study Was Conducted And What The Scientists Analyzed

To better understand the effects of the ketogenic diet on the body, the research team monitored rats subjected to four different types of diets over a minimum period of nine months. The groups were divided as follows: a traditional Western-style high-fat diet; an extremely high-fat and low-carbohydrate diet, similar to the ketogenic diet; a low-fat and high-carbohydrate diet; and a low-fat diet but with protein levels equivalent to those of the ketogenic diet.

Throughout the study, researchers observed significant changes in the animals’ metabolism. Compared to the traditional high-fat diet, the rats following the ketogenic pattern gained significantly less weight, which, at first glance, reinforces one of the main arguments in favor of the diet.

However, as the analysis progressed, concerning signs emerged. Male rats subjected to the ketogenic diet developed fatty liver disease, along with impaired liver function, a clear indication of metabolic disturbance. According to physiologist Amandine Chaix, senior author of the study, “when there is an extremely high intake of fat, these lipids need to be stored somewhere, and they usually end up accumulating in the blood and the liver.”

Changes In Blood Sugar Regulation And Metabolic Risks

In addition to liver problems, the study identified significant changes in blood sugar regulation. Both male and female rats on the ketogenic diet exhibited low blood glucose and insulin levels after just two to three months of experimentation. While this may seem positive at first, deeper analyses showed that the problem lay in the regulation of these levels.

The scientists found that the pancreatic cells of the animals were not producing enough insulin, indicating a functional impairment of the organ. The hypothesis raised by the team is that the overload of fats, also called lipids, in the blood was stressing the pancreatic cells, hindering their ability to produce insulin adequately.

Physiologist Molly Gallop, lead author of the study, emphasized the need for caution when interpreting the benefits of the ketogenic diet. According to her, many previous studies have only analyzed short-term effects or focused exclusively on weight loss, without considering other aspects of metabolic health. “There is still not enough data on what happens in the long term or on other facets of metabolism,” she highlighted.

Despite this, there is a relevant positive point: when the rats were taken off the ketogenic diet, blood sugar regulation returned to normal. This data suggests that the observed metabolic effects may be reversible, at least in animal models.

Ketogenic Diet: Therapeutic Origin And Limits For Weight Loss

It is important to remember that the ketogenic diet was not originally created with a focus on weight loss. Its development occurred as a therapeutic strategy for treating epilepsy, a condition for which it is still used today. Ketosis, a metabolic state induced by the diet, mimics some effects of starvation, forcing the body to use fat as its primary energy source instead of glucose.

The researchers believe that this low availability of sugar in the blood may explain the reduction of seizures in epileptic patients. However, when applied to other contexts, such as weight loss, the ketogenic diet may carry risks that outweigh its potential benefits.

This study, combined with previous research, indicates that the increased risk of metabolic and liver problems may not offset the observed weight loss, especially when there is no proper medical supervision. Therefore, experts recommend that anyone interested in adopting the ketogenic diet consult a healthcare professional beforehand, evaluating risks, medical history, and individual goals.

The complete research was published in the journal Science Advances and contributes to an increasingly necessary debate about the limits of restrictive diets and the real metabolic cost of rapid weight loss.
