Bullet train between Rio and São Paulo promises to revolutionize transportation in Brazil with journeys in 1h45, costing R$50 billion and creating 10 thousand jobs.

The bullet train between Rio and São Paulo could become a reality! With a cost of R$50 billion, the project promises to reduce travel time to 1 hour and 45 minutes and create 10 jobs. Will it be the revolution that transportation in Brazil so desperately needs or just another unattainable dream?

Brazil is about to take a historic step in infrastructure.

A high-speed project that promises to unite the country's largest metropolises, Rio de Janeiro e São Paulo, is rekindling hopes and doubts.

With astronomical costs and equally grand benefits, the long-awaited bullet train is closer to becoming a reality.

The ambition behind the bullet train

Announced with the goal of reducing travel time between capitals to just 1h45, the bullet train is positioned as a watershed in national transportation.

The investment required to carry out this work is colossal: $ 50 billion.

The expectation is that around 100,000 will be generated. 10 thousand direct and indirect jobs during construction, a significant impact on the Brazilian economy.

From February 2023, the project led by the company TAV Brazil received federal authorization to move forward, and now obtaining environmental licenses is the main challenge.

If everything goes according to schedule, construction should begin in 2027, scheduled for completion in 2032.

Redesigned route and strategic points

The original plan, conceived in 2010, has undergone some important changes.

the course of 417 km will include stops in strategic cities, such as São José dos Campos, Volta Redonda, in addition to new points in the North Zone of Sao Paulo and in the center of Rio.

The measure aims to increase accessibility and positive impact in more regions along the route.

The complexity of the route

Although much of the line is planned to be built on the surface, the project includes technical challenges, such as the need for three large tunnels in densely urbanized areas.

The largest of them, with 20 km, will be in São Paulo.

In Guarulhos and Arujá, the tunnels will have, respectively, 8,5 km e 3,5 km, minimizing the impacts on residential areas in these regions.

Integration with the Rodoanel Norte

Second Bernardo FigueiredoCEO of TAV Brazil, the train will be able to share part of the infrastructure with the Rodoanel Norte, in Sao Paulo.

The decision still depends on negotiations with the state government.

This integration aims to optimize the route, in addition to reducing costs and urban impacts.

In Rio de Janeiro, the Baron of Mauá Station, Better known as Leopoldina, is expected to be the final point of the bullet train, connecting the center of Rio to the rest of the line.

Feasibility and economic challenges

Despite all the promises, the project faces great skepticism.

The high cost of implementation and technical complexity raise doubts about its viability.

Experts point out that the execution could be even more expensive than estimated.

On the other hand, the potential benefits are hard to ignore.

With the bullet train, the journey between Rio and São Paulo can be made in less than two hours, an unimaginable time for road trips, which currently take around six hours.

Furthermore, the impact on tourism, business and mobility can boost the economy of both cities and influence similar projects in other regions of Brazil.

Future of transportation in Brazil

If the bullet train is completed as planned, Brazil will join a select group of countries with high-speed lines.

In addition to putting the country in the spotlight on the global stage, the project can serve as a model for the modernization of the national railway infrastructure.

But will we finally see this billion-dollar project come to fruition?

Between optimism and distrust, the population anxiously awaits the realization of this dream that has lasted decades.

Yes, it will be a reality as long as Chinese companies come in to do it, and I guarantee it will be ready in less than 5 years. They are experts at doing it without any hassle.

It would be a dream if this were the milestone to connect all of Brazil's capitals by train.
I can already imagine a Rio – Porto Alegre corridor passing through Curitiba and Floripa

If a Chinese company takes it over, you might be out, if it ends up like the green line in Curitiba that took 17 years, full of defects…
