The Largest Missile in Brazil Is Launched for the First Time in the Amazon in Roraima During Operation Atlas 2025, with Army and Air Force.

The largest missile in Brazil, part of the Astros system, was launched for the first time in the Amazon region this Thursday (10/09/2025) in Bonfim, Roraima, on the border with Guyana. The action is part of Operation Atlas 2025, the largest joint training of the Armed Forces of the country, bringing together the Army, Air Force, and Navy.

The objective is to test the interoperability of the troops and improve defense strategies in the Amazon.

The Astros system — which stands for Artillery Saturation Rocket System — is capable of launching rockets and long-range missiles, hitting targets up to 300 km away with high precision.

The launch marked a significant advancement in Brazil’s military capability, strengthening strategic presence in the northern region of the country.

Historic Launch of the Largest Missile in Brazil in Roraima

The launch of the largest missile in Brazil took place in Serra do Tucano, an isolated area used for military training.

During the exercise, tanks, armored vehicles, and ground artillery operated in conjunction with combat aircraft from the Brazilian Air Force (FAB).

“Operation Atlas crowned an unprecedented deployment of troops and equipment from all regions of the country to Roraima, demonstrating the integration between the Army, Navy, and Air Force,” said General Viana Filho, military commander of the Amazon.

The training recreated scenarios of armed confrontation, allowing the troops to test cutting-edge strategies and technologies.

The Army and the Air Force used the Astros system for long-range shots, highlighting the evolution of military doctrines and the capability for joint action of the forces.

According to the Ministry of Defense, the operation is a routine activity and is not related to recent international tensions involving attacks by Venezuelan vessels.

Education and Defense: Students Observe Up Close

Students from the International Relations course at the Federal University of Roraima (UFRR) observed the exercise on-site. Professor Nickolas Sá highlighted that the experience brought theory and practice closer together.

“It is extremely important for students to see firsthand what a military exercise looks like. In the classroom, we discuss theories about war and sovereignty, but here they were able to understand what it is like to be in a battlefield,” Sá said.

Student Camille Silva reported that the experience reinforced the understanding of the importance of protecting the Amazon.

“It was impressive to see the strength and organization of the Armed Forces and understand how Brazil prepares to protect the Amazon,” she said.

Operation Atlas 2025: Integration and Technology

Operation Atlas 2025 mobilized nearly 10,000 military personnel, with 6,000 in Roraima. The actions include satellite transmissions to the Joint Operations Center in Brasília and demonstrations in Boa Vista, Bonfim, Manaus, and other strategic regions.

“The use of drones and missile systems shows the evolution of ground military doctrine and reinforces the presence of the Armed Forces in the Amazon,” General Viana Filho added.

The training continues until the end of this week, consolidating Roraima as the stage for a historic milestone for national defense and for demonstrating the power of the largest missile in Brazil.
