The construction of the fifth Macaé-class patrol vessel, the NPa Miramar, reinforces national defense and boosts the economy with innovation and job creation.

The Brazilian Navy took another important step towards strengthening national defense by starting construction of the fifth Macaé-class patrol vessel, the NPa Miramar, today. The keel-laying ceremony took place at the Rio de Janeiro Navy Arsenal (AMRJ) and marked the beginning of the assembly process for the new vessel, which is scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2027.

The work began with the installation of an 11-ton central block, a structure that will support the assembly of the hull. This is another milestone in the Patrol Vessel Acquisition Program (Pronapa), which has already resulted in the delivery of three vessels into operation: the Macaé (P70), the Macau (P71) and the Maracanã (P72). In addition to the Miramar, another vessel of the same class, the NPa Mangaratiba (P73), is under construction in the same arsenal, with a launch scheduled for March 2026.

The new 500-ton patrol vessels play a crucial role in protecting Brazil’s interests both at sea and in inland waters. According to the Brazilian Navy, the project reinforces the country’s presence in the defense and technological innovation arena, ensuring sovereignty and security in naval operations.

In addition to its strategic impact, the construction of the fifth Macaé-class patrol vessel boosts the local and national economy. Part of the Growth Acceleration Program (PAC), Pronapa is part of the Innovation for the Defense Industry axis, generating direct and indirect jobs and fostering the industrial base of the sector. More than ten partner companies are involved in the project, which keeps the AMRJ production line active, essential for the development of Brazilian shipbuilding.

Brazilian Navy has been striving to innovate

Since the delivery of the NPa Maracanã in 2022, the Rio de Janeiro Navy Arsenal has stood out in preserving and expanding knowledge in construction processes. This expertise has enabled advances in the Mangaratiba and Miramar projects, reinforcing the Brazilian Navy's commitment to innovation and expanding its technological capacity.

With the start of construction of the fifth Macaé-class patrol vessel, the country continues to consolidate its position in the naval sector, while ensuring greater protection of its waters and strategic investments in the future.
