Military Fleet Renewal Process Faces Obstacles Due to Armored Vehicle Retention at Hamburg Port
The first armored vehicle acquired by the Brazilian Army for the renewal of its fleet is currently held at the port of Hamburg, Germany, due to the lack of necessary documentation. The Centauro II-BR, from the Italian consortium Iveco-Oto Melara, was scheduled to be shipped to Brazil on June 20, but the absence of documents prevented the departure, according to the Naval Defense website.

The Italian consortium Iveco-Oto Melara, winner of the bidding process for the purchase of 98 units of the Cavalry Combat Armored Vehicle (VBC Cav) Centauro II-BR, sent a letter detailing the situation to the Brazilian Army. According to the communication, the customs procedures are in the process of resolution, with an expected shipment of the armored vehicle to Brazil on July 2.

Testing Phase and Technical Evaluations
This first armored vehicle of the Brazilian army is part of a testing phase necessary for the finalization of the purchase. The total acquisition, estimated at R$ 5 billion, involves the purchase of 98 units. Technical tests began in Italy, with over 80% of the assessments completed by Brazilian military engineers. After this phase, the vehicles will be sent to Brazil for operational tests in combat environments and specific terrains of the country.

In Brazil, the operational tests will be conducted at the Armored Instruction Center in Santa Maria, Rio Grande do Sul. Delay and Impact on the Schedule

The second armored vehicle, which will also undergo testing, is expected to be shipped to Brazil still in July, after undergoing a painting process to match the colors of the Brazilian Army.
The process of selecting the new armored vehicle was completed in November 2022, during the final days of Jair Bolsonaro’s government. The signing of the contract marked a significant step in modernizing the Army’s fleet, with the expectation of improving the defense and response capacity of the Brazilian land force.
