Billion-Dollar Project Will Connect Lima to Ica in Two and a Half Hours, with Strategic Stations, High Capacity, and Strong Economic and Social Impact for Peru in the Coming Decades

Peru has begun shaping one of the largest infrastructure investments in its recent history: the construction of the Lima-Ica high-speed train. The project, made possible with financial support from Chinese capital, emerges as a strategic bet to transform the transport dynamics in the central region of the country, connecting the capital to the southern coast more efficiently and stimulating new economic and tourist flows.

A Large-Scale Railway Corridor

The future train will have a route of 323 kilometers along the central coast of Peru. Today, those traveling by car between Lima and Ica face about 5 hours of travel.

With the high-speed railway system, this time is expected to drop to approximately two and a half hours, creating a faster and more comfortable alternative for residents, workers, and visitors.

The expectation is that this reduction in travel time will directly impact the daily lives of thousands of people who rely on this transportation.

Billion-Dollar Investment and Complex Engineering of the Project

The project is budgeted at US$ 6.5 billion, an amount equivalent to about R$ 35 billion. Trains are expected to reach a maximum speed of up to 200 kilometers per hour and will stop at 15 stations along the route.

Among the main stops are Villa El Salvador, Lurín, Cañete, Pisco, and Paracas, locations considered strategic for tourism and productive activities.

The route also includes approximately 47 kilometers of viaducts and 32 kilometers of tunnels, essential structures to maintain the expected performance.

Mobility, Capacity, and Timelines for the High-Speed Train Project

The daily capacity of the system is estimated to be up to 45,000 passengers, which should relieve the pressure on the South Pan-American Highway, one of the busiest roads in the country.

According to David Miranda, Director of Infrastructure Management and Transport Services at the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC), the execution requires rigorous planning and well-defined phases.

The technical documentation should be completed by 2027, while the start of construction is expected in 2032, with construction taking between six and seven years.

If the schedule is maintained, the Lima-Ica train is expected to begin operations in the 2040s, establishing itself as the fastest railway system in South America.

The project marks a new chapter in the modernization of Peruvian infrastructure, as well as reinforcing the presence of large regional integration projects in the country.
