Couple Turns Old Dream Into Reality in Minas Gerais, Builds Ecological Cabins Without Utility Company Energy, Preserves Wildlife and Lives in Direct Contact with Nature, Committing to Sustainability and Simplicity

At 60 Years Old, when many think about slowing down, a couple decided to completely change course. They left the city, started over from scratch, and transformed a plot of land in Minas Gerais into a sustainable farm, marked by environmental preservation, energy autonomy, and daily coexistence with wildlife.

The project is located in São João Batista do Glória and was born from an old dream: to live close to nature, away from the urban pace, and with the least environmental impact possible. Just before the pandemic, the couple began construction of the space and took on practically all stages of the work, from planning to execution.

When the pandemic began, isolation did not interrupt their plans. On the contrary. While many people faced severe restrictions in cities, they spent months building the farm, organizing the land, and structuring a new way of life without feeling the effects of urban confinement.

The information was shared through independent audiovisual content, with detailed records of the construction, the sustainable solutions adopted, and the daily routine on-site, according to interviews and images recorded directly on the property.

Environmental Preservation Guides All Project Decisions

From the beginning, the couple established a clear rule: to preserve as much of the original vegetation as possible. Of the total area, about 60% remains as an environmental reserve, providing shelter for wild animals and balance to the local ecosystem.

They did not cut down any large trees. Instead, they adapted buildings, trails, and living areas to the existing terrain and vegetation. As a result, monkeys, coatis, wild birds, and howler monkeys became part of the farm’s routine.

Over time, the animals approached naturally. Marmosets roam around the cabins, groups of coatis cross the land, and howler monkeys announce their presence with their characteristic sounds, especially at dawn and at the end of the day.

This coexistence further reinforced their commitment to preservation. According to the owners, the goal was never just to live in the countryside, but to create a space where humans respect and coexist with nature.

Solar Energy Ensures Total Autonomy Without Utility Company

The absence of electricity from the utility company represented one of the biggest challenges of the project. For over three years, the couple has been waiting for the connection to the conventional grid. Even so, they decided not to depend on it.

To solve the problem, they implemented an off-grid solar energy system, completely independent. Each cabin has photovoltaic panels that capture energy from 6:30 AM, storing electricity in stationary batteries, with four units of 220 amperes each.

This system ensures autonomy throughout the night, powering refrigerators, lighting, and basic outlets. To reduce consumption, the couple replaced high-energy-consuming equipment with simple and efficient solutions.

Instead of an electric shower, for example, they installed a thermosiphon system, which heats water using solar panels, without using electricity. The circulation happens naturally, keeping the water hot throughout the day.

Additionally, the farm features a manually constructed artificial pond. The space houses ornamental fish, including koi, and helps regulate the microclimate, making the environment cooler during hot periods.

Ecological Cabins Combine Reuse and Conscious Tourism

As work progressed, the couple decided to transform part of the space into an experience for visitors. Thus, they built two ecological cabins, fully integrated into the landscape and primarily constructed with reused materials.

Doors, windows, stairs, furniture, and decorative objects came from different cities, collected over time. Pallets became sofas, logs turned into lamps, and old school desks were repurposed as rustic tables.

Each cabin operates independently, both in energy and leisure areas. Guests have exclusive spaces for campfires, hammocks, picnics, and enjoying the landscape.

To preserve the environment, the couple established clear rules, such as the prohibition of loud music. According to them, the goal is not the volume of guests, but the quality of the experience.

Simplistic Living Redefines Comfort and Well-Being

Over the years, the farm ceased to be just a project and began to represent a new way of living. The couple produces food on a small scale, with corn for personal consumption, as well as vegetables, herbs, and fruits like lemon, orange, banana, and blackberry.

The water used comes from a spring located about 800 meters above the property, supplying the entire property by gravity. The system allows for responsible use and reuse for irrigation.

More than a change of address, the decision to restart at 60 brought about a profound shift in mindset. The couple claims to have learned, in practice, that comfort does not depend on excess, but on autonomy, silence, and time.

Today, surrounded by preserved forest, wildlife, and a project built with their own hands, they show that it is never too late to completely change one’s life when there is purpose.
