American SUV 3.6 V6 with 280 HP and 7 Seats Appears for About R$ 40 Thousand. Find Out Why the Dodge Journey Became One of the Biggest Discoveries in the Used Market.

For years, the Dodge Journey 3.6 V6 held the position of one of the most desired SUVs for families seeking space, power, and comfort. Now, more than a decade after its peak in the Brazilian market, it returns to discussions as one of the “hidden gems” of the used market: for around R$ 40 thousand, you can bring home a large SUV equipped with a V6 engine of 280 HP, automatic transmission, real seven seats, and a level of comfort that many new models simply do not offer in this price range.

What used to be a luxury and weekend car now appears as an extremely attractive alternative for large families, for those who travel a lot, or simply for those who understand the real value of a large, powerful, and well-built vehicle.

The 280 HP Pentastar V6: Abundant Power and Smooth Accelerations

One of the great strengths of the Journey is the 3.6 V6 Pentastar engine, one of the most well-known and awarded powertrains in American engineering. It delivers 280 HP smoothly, effortlessly, and combined with the 6-speed automatic transmission, it forms a robust and reliable duo.

This setup made the SUV be compared, at the time, to models of a higher category — including some German ones — for its ability to push its nearly two tons without hesitation. It is not a sports car, but it is one of the cars that surprises the most with the “push” when the accelerator meets the floor.

The maintenance of this mechanical set is not as expensive as many think: parts are easily found, and specialized mechanics are already familiar with the wear patterns of the Pentastar.

Seven Real Seats and Space That Rivals Minivans

Few used SUVs in this price range can offer what the Journey delivers in terms of versatility. There are seven real seats, with a third row suitable for adults on short trips and extremely comfortable for children and teenagers. The interior space is a spectacle by itself:

  • spacious and soft seats
  • high driving position
  • large doors facilitating access
  • generous trunk even with the third row set up
  • air conditioning with multiple zones, depending on the version

The feeling is closer to a luxury minivan than to a traditional SUV — and that is a great compliment.

American Finish: Comfort and Equipment

Although it is not a technological car by today’s standards, the Journey surprises with its interior setup. The finish is solid, with plenty of leather, sturdy dashboard, and ergonomics typically American, designed for families that spend hours traveling. Common items in the V6 versions include:

  • leather seats
  • differential air conditioning
  • multimedia screen (depending on the year)
  • cruise control
  • controls on the steering wheel
  • ABS brakes and stability control
  • 17 or 19-inch alloy wheels
  • automatic transmission with manual mode

Overall, it is a car that conveys a sense of solidity — a characteristic that keeps it valued among those who know what they are buying.

Fuel Consumption: The Sensitive Point, But Not Surprising

Like all large V6 engines, fuel consumption is not the strong point of the Dodge Journey. The actual usage numbers are around:

  • City: 6 to 7.5 km/l
  • Highway: 9 to 11 km/l

For a vehicle with 280 HP, seven seats, nearly two tons, and SUV aerodynamics, it is exactly what to expect. The Journey never tried to be economical — it delivers space, comfort, and power. Those who buy this type of car know exactly what they are paying for and what they are getting.

The Truth of the Market: Why Does It Cost So Little Now?

There are some factors that explain the sharp drop in price:

1. Large Engines Depreciate in Brazil

The country has a tradition of favoring small and economical engines. Large SUVs suffer more from market fluctuations.

2. High IPVA and Insurance Costs in Some States

The 3.6 engine raises taxation and insurance categories, distancing some buyers.

3. Lack of Consumer Knowledge

The majority of people only look at fuel expenses without evaluating the rest of the vehicle.

4. Supply Has Always Been Greater Than Demand

In the used market, this widened the drop in price and created opportunities like this.

But for the right audience — large families, people who travel frequently, those seeking comfort and robustness — there is hardly another option in this price range that delivers everything the Journey offers.

Points to Watch When Buying

Even though it is a robust car, it is essential to observe:

  • maintenance history
  • condition of the automatic transmission
  • air conditioning system (may require repairs)
  • rear suspension (components may wear out)
  • provenance and actual mileage

When everything is in order, the car usually delivers years of use without major surprises.

Current Situation: Is It Worth Buying?

Yes — as long as the buyer knows exactly what they are getting: a large, comfortable, spacious, extremely powerful SUV, but with higher consumption and maintenance costs compatible with a vehicle of nearly 300 HP.

For those who have always wanted an SUV with the behavior of a premium car but never had the willingness to pay R$ 150 thousand, the used Journey has become a rare chance.

It is one of those cars that, when they appear in the R$ 40 thousand range, disappear quickly. Those who know buy. Those who buy usually do not regret.
