Expected completion in the first quarter of 2022. The expectation is that the well can contribute significantly to the increase in oil production in the region, boosting the local and national economy.
The drillship in charge of drilling the well Pitu Oeste left Rio de Janeiro yesterday (05/12) heading to a location in Rio Grande do Norte. Drilling is scheduled to begin in December in the BM-POT-17 concession, marking the return of Petrobras à Equatorial Margin, which stretches from Rio Grande do Norte to Amapá along the Brazilian coast.
Petrobras obtained the operating license for the IBAMA in October 2023 for drilling exploratory wells in deep waters of Potiguar Basin, and on Equatorial Margin Brazilian, as announced in a statement released by Agência Petrobras de Notícias.
Within the scope of the same Environmental license, Petrobras plans to drill the well anhangá, in the POT-M-762 concession, 79km from the coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte and close to the well Pitu Oeste.

“Our 2024-2028 Strategic Plan foresees the investment of US$ 3,1 billion in investments in exploratory activities in the Equatorial Margin. This effort already gives a measure of the confidence we have in the potential of this stretch of the Brazilian coast, which is very promising and fundamental for guaranteeing the country's energy security”, explained Jean Paul Prates, president of Petrobras.
Pitu Oeste It will be the third well in the BM-POT-17 concession and drilling is expected to take 3 to 5 months. The last well in this concession was drilled in 2015. The rig hired by Petrobras was in Guanabara Bay for hull cleaning and supply.
“The well of Pitu Oeste means the resumption of our activities in Equatorial Margin and an exploratory campaign that we believe in, as it will further expand Petrobras' activities to the northeast and north and help finance our energy transition”, declared Joelson Falcão Mendes, director of Exploration and Production at Petrobras.
