The drillship responsible for drilling the Pitu Oeste well left Rio de Janeiro yesterday (12/05) heading to the location in Rio Grande do Norte. Drilling is scheduled to begin later this December in the BM-POT-17 concession, marking Petrobras’ return to the Equatorial Margin, which extends from Rio Grande do Norte to Amapá along the Brazilian coast.
Petrobras obtained an operating license from IBAMA in October 2023 for drilling exploratory wells in deep waters of the Potiguar Basin, in the Brazilian Equatorial Margin, as announced in a statement released by the Petrobras News Agency.
Under the same Environmental License, Petrobras plans to drill the Anhangá well in the POT-M-762 concession, 79km off the coast of the state of Rio Grande do Norte and near the Pitu Oeste well.

“Our Strategic Plan 2024-2028 includes an investment of US$ 3.1 billion in exploratory activities in the Equatorial Margin. This effort already reflects the confidence we have in the potential of this stretch of the Brazilian coastline, which is very promising and essential for ensuring the country’s energy security,” explained Jean Paul Prates, president of Petrobras.
Pitu Oeste will be the third well in the BM-POT-17 concession, and it is expected that drilling will last from 3 to 5 months. The last well in this concession was drilled in 2015. The rig contracted by Petrobras was in Guanabara Bay for hull cleaning and refueling.
“The Pitu Oeste well signifies the resumption of our activities in the Equatorial Margin and an exploratory campaign that we believe in, as it will further expand Petrobras’ activities to the northeast and north and help fund our energy transition,” stated Joelson Falcão Mendes, director of Exploration and Production at Petrobras.
