Lived Isolated In Area Of Australian Forest For Years, Survived With Resources From The Environment And Reappeared Outside The Forest To Resume Studies, Obtain PhD And Work As University Professor, In A Trajectory Documented By The Country’s Public Press.

During part of his adult life, Australian Gregory Smith lived isolated in an area of forest in northern New South Wales, Australia, keeping almost total distance from other people.

During this period, his routine was marked by direct survival from the environment, prolonged silence, and a conscious rejection of social interaction.

Years later, outside the forest, he resumed formal studies, completed university education, obtained a PhD, and began working as a professor.

This trajectory was recorded by the Australian public broadcaster ABC, in news reports and in an episode of the program Australian Story, as well as being included in his memoir.

Isolation In Forest In Northern Australia

According to ABC, Smith entered Goonengerry National Park on the north coast of New South Wales in 1990, after a long period of personal instability and social ruptures.

In the region, he became known for living inside the forest and for avoiding any regular interaction with other people.

When he left the forest definitively, about ten years later according to the broadcaster, he presented signs of malnutrition, physical fragility, and signs of psychological suffering associated with prolonged isolation.

Family Background And Withdrawal From Society

Before reaching the forest, Smith had a childhood marked by domestic violence and abandonment, including time spent in an orphanage as a child.

Later, he faced substance addiction, episodes of emotional instability, and periods living on the streets.

This set of factors appears in reports as the backdrop that led him to distance himself from urban life.

According to the reconstruction made by ABC, the visit to the park did not occur as an adventure or planned experience, but as a direct consequence of homelessness and lack of stability.

Makeshift Life In Goonengerry National Park

A report aired in 2018 by Australian Story states that Smith traveled down a dirt road in the Mullumbimby area until reaching the interior of the national park.

In the first days, he faced cold, constant rain, and the frequent presence of leeches.

What marked him the most, according to the account, was the complete absence of urban noises such as engines, voices, or traffic.

Over time, he improvised a minimal structure for staying.

A fixed point for fire, a small workbench made of stones, and a resting place using materials found in the forest were set up.

Extreme Diet And Survival In The Bush

The reports mention the existence of a nearby creek that provided water continuously.

His diet was described as an extreme adaptation to environmental conditions.

Smith claimed to have eaten insects, larvae, small animals, and reptiles to survive.

In one of his accounts, he summarized this phase by saying he started eating “anything that crawled.”

Among the examples cited are beetles, worms, lizards, as well as specific episodes like consuming a python and hunting bats with a slingshot.

Discrepancies About The Time Of Isolation

The exact duration of the period he spent in the forest does not appear uniformly across public sources.

In the 2018 report, ABC noted that Smith had difficulties with memory.

Although he himself mentioned around ten years, rural residents of the area remembered him and estimated a shorter interval.

Smith himself was described as someone who could not accurately specify how long he stayed in the park.

The broadcaster attributed this imprecision to years of alcohol and drug abuse, as well as episodes of psychosis during isolation.

Exit From The Forest And Hospitalization

Despite these discrepancies, later reports from ABC adopted the version that the entry occurred in 1990 and the definitive exit about a decade later.

In 1999, Smith was hit by a car on a remote road in the northern part of the state.

After the accident, he ended up hospitalized in a mental health unit.

At the time, he weighed just over 41 kilograms, a figure cited as indicative of the physical deterioration associated with the time in the bush.

Gradual Return To Formal Education

After leaving the forest, the focus of the reports follows the process of reintegration into social life.

A decisive moment occurred after a hospital discharge, described by ABC objectively.

Sitting on a bench by the Tweed River in Tweed Heads, Smith carried a backpack with alcohol and drugs.

There, he decided to abandon everything and not return to consuming substances.

Studies, University And PhD

In 2002, he enrolled in a course at TAFE Southport to complete the education interrupted in his adolescence.

Even during his studies, he still lived under unstable conditions. He sometimes slept in his car and studied in beach areas and dunes in the region.

The education progressed gradually. Later, he entered university, completed his undergraduate degree, and obtained a PhD in sociology from Southern Cross University.

Work As A Professor And Public Recognition

In ABC’s most recent productions, Smith appears as an academic who uses his own experience in discussions about public policies.

His work focuses on issues related to the homeless population in northern New South Wales.

By 2019, he already maintained a stable relationship as a university lecturer. In 2023, he took on academic leadership roles after attaining tenure.

That same year, he received the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his services to the community.
