A man managed to annul a traffic fine with the help of ChatGPT. The case drew attention after the defendant used artificial intelligence to prepare his defense, present legal arguments, and contest the allegations in court.
A young 23-year-old driver from Kazakhstan managed to annul a traffic fine with the help of ChatGPT. Kenzhebek Ismailov, a resident of Almaty, used artificial intelligence to defend himself in court, without a lawyer.
The case happened in December 2024 and became the first in the country where a citizen wins a legal dispute with direct assistance from AI.

Maneuver Filmed By Cameras
It all started when Ismailov was taking his mother to the hospital. On the way, the car in front of him stopped unexpectedly and completely blocked the only lane of the street.
With no alternatives, he used the bus lane on the right to maneuver around the obstacle. The action was recorded by surveillance cameras, and days later, he received a fine at home.
The penalty amount was 5,800 tenge, equivalent to about 11 dollars. He tried to explain his decision to the traffic authority but had his contestation denied.
Unwilling to spend money on a lawyer for such a small amount, he decided to take the case to court with the assistance of ChatGPT.
Documents And Strategy With AI
Ismailov reported the incident to the AI tool, including the detail that the recording of the maneuver was available on the traffic authority’s website. ChatGPT suggested that he file a lawsuit and even drafted the necessary documents.
In a post made on platform X (formerly Twitter), he shared that he was mistreated by the agents when he tried to argue in person. They claimed that paying the fine was an admission of guilt, even though in Kazakhstan there are 50% discounts for those who pay early.
Hearing And Favorable Decision
After filing the lawsuit with the documents prepared by ChatGPT, Ismailov received a call from the traffic authority.
The proposal was to cancel the fine directly, without the need for a hearing. Even so, the artificial intelligence recommended that he continue with the lawsuit, and he followed the advice.
During the hearing, which lasted about 10 minutes, the judge asked questions about what happened. Instead of answering directly, the young man used ChatGPT’s voice synthesis feature, which spoke for him. According to Ismailov, the responses were so convincing that the judge decided to cancel the fine.
He described the episode as “probably the first test in Kazakhstan that was 99% conducted with the help of ChatGPT.” For him, the technology played a decisive role in the positive outcome of the case.
New Suit Against The Police
Even after winning the dispute, Ismailov claims he filed the lawsuit just on principle.
He says he knew he was right and wanted to prove it. Now, with the fine canceled, he intends to take a further step: suing the Kazakh police.
His plan is to use ChatGPT again to draft the civil suit. The goal is to request compensation for lost time and the troubles faced during the contestation of the infraction.
