Tragedy Started with a Poorly Planned Fire and Turned the Town into a Ghost Town, Direct Inspiration for the Universe of Silent Hill
In May 1962, on the eve of Memorial Day, officials from a small town in Centralia, Pennsylvania, made a decision that seemed harmless: to burn the trash from an open dump to clean the area. What they did not know is that the area they were set to ignite was over a decommissioned and poorly sealed coal mine.
With the burn, the fire spread rapidly through the interconnected underground tunnels, fueled by the mineral coal still present underground. And since then, it has never stopped, for 60 years!
Attempts Failed and the Fire Became Permanent
Over time, people from all walks of life attempted to put an end to the fire that consumes Centralia’s underground. Engineers, technical teams, and even government representatives mobilized, trying a variety of methods: they threw water, covered it with clay, used excavators, and even tried to seal the tunnels with special materials. Nothing worked. The U.S. government spent around 40 million dollars on these attempts, but in the end, the fire remained strong, as if it ignored any human efforts to contain it.

The ground temperature in some areas reaches over 500ºC! Furthermore, the geology of the town has made it even more difficult to extinguish the fire.
The Town Was Almost Completely Abandoned
As the years went by, the situation worsened to the point that the United States government started a relocation program. Most residents accepted compensation and left the town. Of the more than 1,200 inhabitants, only five remain, who continue to live there with special permission.
The houses were demolished, the streets became overgrown, and what remains resembles a post-apocalyptic movie scene: sidewalks that lead nowhere, smoke rising from the ground, and signs warning of the invisible danger.
From Tragedy to Pop Culture: The Inspiration for Silent Hill
The mysterious atmosphere and the real records of the town served as a basis for the universe of the game and film Silent Hill. Although adapted with fictional elements, the dark and oppressive essence of Centralia is present in the work: a deserted place, covered in fog and hiding dangers that arise from underground.
Experts claim that the fire may continue for another hundred, two hundred years or even longer. In the meantime, Centralia remains a chilling reminder of how a seemingly simple mistake can turn into a tragedy of unimaginable proportions.
